Saw a post at another forum about the USPS Informed Delivery service, signed up, and have found it useful.
Since the UP postal service photographs each piece of mail during the sorting process, they decided to make the photos available to the recipient. Useful if you are looking for a specific piece of mail, etc.
I would have found that useful when on a recent camping trip and on that road trip mentioned in another post, I sent postcards to my dad, all with first-class stamps. While he has received other postcards from me, he never got those. He's 100 years old so greatly appreciates postcards. Bummer.

Use this service while you can, because it may be shut down in the future. Photographing every piece of mail that comes through allows the USPS to set up a nationwide database of who is communicating with whom. It's exactly the same thing as the controversial "metadata" collection of phone numbers that has been in the news. I'm surprised the post office project hasn't attracted the same attention, and I expect a court challenge if there hasn't been one already.
