What to take on trip to pick up our baby?

We're going to pick up our 5.0TA in a week. We'll be leaving from Dallas and I was wondering if there is a general checklist of things folks typically take in the way of tools, gadgets, etc.? We do plan on tooling around a bit before we head back. Thanks.

My list, at least the items that might overlap with your needs:

Trailer hitch, including entire setup – check for all components.

Full set of wrenches and sockets. Including 1/2” torque wrench and wheel nut star wrench (13/16 wrench for trailer wheel nuts (also check nut size on wheel lock nuts))

Wheel lock nuts (in tote at home)

screw jack (in truck)

Fully charged 3/8 drill, Electric 1/2” drill, bits including large ones, charger, both drill batteries

long extension cord (#12 black long one).

Water hoses for black rinse and potable, pressure regulator for water input

Sewer hose and fittings, rubber gloves, tank additive

Wheel chocks, wheel ramp for tire change?

Multimeter, possibly wire upgrade for trailer plug?

Butane soldering gear including rosin core wire

Wheel clamp and hitch lock if used, locks for same.

I will be installing my own WD hitch and may be doing some electrical work when I pick up the trailer, so I may need tools that you don't. OTOH, options in the event of unexpected minor problems are a fine thing. More tools are better until you put on some mileage.

Enjoy your new trailer,

Cheers,

Allan

So the ETI RVs are SAE not metric?

On the 21, they are 13/16 wrench size, 1/2 by 20 threads. I assume the same for other sized Escape trailers, but do not know for sure.

I am not sure whether ETI supplies a wheel nut wrench or not. A torque wrench to get the torque right is not absolutely needed, but I like it, especially on alloy rims. The torque for the 1/2 by 20 nuts is 100 ftlbs (this is more or less the middle of the acceptable range).

The star wrench makes spinning the nuts quicker, which I prefer for the pickup because I will be pulling all four wheels and installing my own set of alloys.

I would suggest that while tools are nice to have, unless you are very fond of Mickey D’s, you bring a grill and/or cooking utensils as well as dinnerware of some sort. Bedding would be nice to have and a variety of clothing given the time of year. And passports would be mandatory. You can always stop at Wally World or a Camping World to pick up necessities, including all the tools previously mentioned.

And like Ford and GM, you will find a mixture of hardware on Escape trailers, and it’s a lot of Square drive screws. And all current Escapes use the same sized lug nuts.

I'd keep a pad and pen handy, and as you go through your day, write down what you use. Dishsoap, scrubber, a couple of pots and pans, plates, bowls, chopping board, knife, a few storage containers. Never leave home without Ziplocks of gallon and quart size.

It also depends on if you are skedaddling back to Texas, or moseying.

Then keep a pad and pen in the trailer as you travel for the list of things you also will want that you didn't think of.

Correct. Appliances are generally from U.S.-based suppliers and typically use SAE-sized fasteners, but could be anything. Propane fitting are pipe threads and SAE flares, both with inch-sized wrench flats. The only mechanical components, so the only place you'll find significant nuts and bolts, are the axles (with suspensions, hubs, and brakes) and the coupler; the axles are Dexter Torflex and use entirely inch (SAE) fasteners. Other fasteners are generally sheet metal screws, wood screws, and small machine screws with Robertson or Phillips heads.

Yes, they're all Torflex #10 axles, with the same studs. Even the 2014-2015 5.0TAs with beam axles and leaf springs are also Dexter, and use the same hub components including the same stud size.

Specifically Robertson, if looking for screwdrivers. I'm guessing mostly #2. Not that a new owner should need to remove any wood screws...

ETI sells most of the stuff you might need. Look under Merchandise on the Escape Trailer site.
They sell a screwdriver that has a set of bits in the handle. Nicely made tool.

Correct, Brian. I did not use the Robertson designation because I wasn’t sure the OP would know the term, so I said “square drive” to be descriptive. And they are mostly #2 with a small number of #3. And if my memory serves correctly, the door hinges on the “classic” Escapes use #1. I’m not sure about the “Gen 2” door hinges.

I laid out an area in my dining room with masking tape showing the size of my truck bed. I then started filling plastic containers with items needed for the trip out and return from Chilliwack. It was a 3-4 month process and involved many packing and repacking. Tools, bedding, hoses, plates, kitchen items, clothes, dog items, water containers and everything I thought of was packed or left at home. You an always stop and pick up items also.

Please bring something to take photos with and keep us posted. We all want to see your new 5.0TA, and pics of the campsites and scenery!

Enjoy, and safe travels!

Why bring anything , find out from ETI what you need, and purchase in Chilliwack.
Using the Canadian Dollar.
