Fires In West

Been joking for over a month when friends ask where we're going next; tell them I hold up my smoke divining finger. We like many of you have had to flee from smoke. So now we're packed up and ready to roll AM tomorrow.

Thought we'd go up to Montana. Google sez take 101 up to 680 to 5 North to 97 and up to 84 then Kennewick... Problem is the fires. We had figured we'd stay at a hotel in Vacaville then next stop around Klamath Falls.

Susan's sister is driving south from Seattle and is being diverted at Medford due to fire. Then we see Caltrans is diverting Northbound traffic at Yreka due to wildfire. Oh boy.... so looks like we're either going to go via Vegas, OR instead go to Santa Fe and figure things out. Will make the decision literally when we start rolling. Last time we were in WY during Eclipse in 2017 we had to run from smoke shortly afterwards from Jackson, and then CO then Santa Fe where we finally stopped breathing smoke. This is bad! Looked like it snowed and inch here due to ash. A very good resource in looking at this is airnow.gov. Great interactive maps and current air quality. Be safe out there.

Must be a good time to have a camper. Stay safe, whatever direction you go.

smoke in CO

A few days ago our daughter was driving on 550 towards Ouray in a rental RV and they had to turn around and head back over the hill and head for Cortez due to smoke too bad for them to handle. Hope the weather helps with the fires and smoke.

Weird- even though the Creek Fire just totally exploded to 147,000 acres- making it the largest in CA modern history the air along the eastern slope is good today. Still going avoid I-5 as I still remember people getting stuck north of Redding and having to run for their lives. That is a tight corridor with no viable secondary roads.
