Will a pickup tailgate open?

For those of you with pickups as TV, does the tailgate open fully with the trailer connected or does it hit the tongue jack?

Does it matter if you a manual or electric jack?

The power jack is easily rotated 90 degrees - i did this just need to tap two existing holes - and then the tailgate clears it fine. Just be aware that the jack then will be hard to get past when lifting off your propane cover - i had to modify mine...and the propane indicator lever was moved (bumped) taking the cover off too, which I was lucky to notice, otherwise I'd have found out while trying to use the stove or furnace etc later.

If you are using WD Hitch and have a manual jack will the tailgate open?

When I pick up E21 in either BC or Washington State and bring an Andersen WDH with me, before I travel 3000 miles across country will need to drill and tap 2 holes so I can open my tailgate if I opt for the power jack?

Are the threaded holes Metric or SAE? What diameter and pitch?

Could I avoid all that if I order a manual jack?

We have the power jack - don’t know about the manual jack
If you will be using a WDH , I would suggest the power jack option .

We have an Escape 19, 2018 GMC Canyon using a Andersen WD hitch. The tailgate only opens about 1/2 way then hits the tongue jack. I put some self adhesive rubber bumpers on the tongue jack to reduce the chance of scratching the tailgate

Standard Jack and the tailgate on my Ram 1500 can open all the way IF I rotate the crank arm up.

We have had a Jack-E-Up for about six years. It solves the problem, and when I put it in storage next week, I'll remove the jack and store it in the garage for the winter. I knew that eventually I was going to drop the tail gate on the jack...

I have a 21NE, towing with an F150, Pro series WDH, and electric jack. I had to turn the jack sideways, as shown by Angie Sipe in the video, to get my tailgate to clear. It has about 2" clearance now.

It depends on the truck. We have a 2018 F150 and we tried the rotation of the power jack and the tailgate still hit the jack. It was a matter of 1/2 inch but it still did not clear the jack. We also have the Fastway WDH.
Ford, in 2018 i think made their tailgate stick out by about 6 inches in the middle area for some reason.

I have a 2017 Ram 1500 and a manual jack. My ball mount is 12" from pin to ball. I couldn't open the tailgate all the way with the original coupler, but can now that I have a Bulldog coupler.

Your tailgate is the same as mine. I have a dropped drawbar for my hitch (no lift kit on the trailer) that sticks out a bit more to make room for the gusset on the drop. If I had the stock bar, I might not clear either. The drawbar is a key factor in as to whether you can get clearance or not.

We have the electric jack on our 19’ & rotated the head so tailgate opens. Also rotated the propane regulator assembly & tanks so it faces to the rear. More room to access the lever on the regulator was achieved.

I have a 2017 Silverado. I do not need a WDH with my 17B. I replaced my manual jack with a power jack, it’s a bit bigger. I purchased an extended drawbar, measured the required clearance I needed and drilled a new hole for the pin. All works well for me.
