Wish My 21 Was This Nice

Met a couple from Germany on the ferry from Hvar to Split today towing an Adria caravan made in Slovenia. It is 20' weighs about the same as my 21 and cost 35K euro.
Among many very nice finishes and design work was a floor heated by the hot water heater and the space heat is both gas and electric. Several floorplans; they had twin beds.

I guess if a person wanted one of these they could buy one and import it to the USA and when roadworthy as in compliant with US standards, put her on the road and enjoy. The 2013 21 does what we need it to do so it won’t be me. I do like some of the European shotguns and have paid the fees and felt it was worth it.

Wow, 16 layouts! Good thing that Escape doesn't offer that many. Some folks would never be able to make up their mind on which one to choose.

Nice modern looking finishes inside. The shortest model is over 22' overall.

At least they have the door on the right side. I really like some of those European designs with the Dometic or Seitz acrylic windows and heat in the floor. That system is available with the Nest and Airstream Basecamp currently.

Their largest trailer- or caravan as they say does have tandem axles. This couple was towing with an Audi that didnt look that big and it definitely had rear squat. They said it was no problem and like almost every vehicle we've seen(heard) it was a diesel.

It just amazes me how much more value there is with features and frankly stunning interior quality for about the same price I paid. If they had it over here I would jump for the larger Alpina in a heartbeat.

The OP quoted a price of 35K Euros which translates to $41,000 USD plus 2.5% import duty plus shipping costs makes the final cost of the trailer over $45,000 USD
It’s a nice trailer but the final cost is considerably higher than a well equipped Escape 21
They obviously spent a lot of time in thoughtful design and engineering .
The 7 year guarantee against leakage is impressive but how that pan’s out in North America is yet to be tested .

This is a typical difference between travels trailers in Europe and North America; the dividing line between single-axle and tandem-axle models is at a much larger size there. Still, there are occasional larger single-axle travel trailers here... but the market here (not any technical requirement) essentially demands tandem on all but the very smallest trailers.

While only about half of recent private (non-commercial) vehicles across western Europe are diesel, diesels are much more common than here, and an SUV towing a trailer is a prime vehicle type in which to choose diesel.

I agree - these trailers are light for their size, and I think that's likely typical of Euro (versus North American) practice. At the other extreme, the shortest model of the Adora range has a similar layout to the Escape 21' and about the same body length (but a bit more overall length due to a longer tongue) and weighs only 1100 kg (2425 lb) as it comes out of the factory, and 1182 kg (2606 lb) ready-to-use; compare that to the Escape 21' at 3210 lb dry. Of course equipment may be slightly different.

There are a few reasons, including lighter (more efficient) frame construction, and omitting that unnecessary second axle on smaller sizes. Even the tires are smaller: 185 R14 C 102 (which means a commercial tire) versus Escape's ST205/75R15. In base form, it doesn't have a (grey) waste water tank (although it has a toilet with its own black tank); again, this is common Euro practice. I note that the carrying capacity (difference between empty weight and maximum allowed weight) is also low in the base specs, although more capacity is available as an option.

european caravans tend to be much lighter, they don't use nearly as much wood in them as we do, more plastics, fewer appliances, much smaller water/grey/black tanks (if any). They tend to have the axles farther back and lower percentage of tongue weight. they do NOT tend to cruise at 100km/h+ (60MPH+) when towing.

It's not from the UK, so yes.... the rest of Europe drives on the right-hand side of the road like us, so the correct side for the door is the same as for here.

The spec's say the body is ABS and polyester? Sounds like plastic vs fiberglass?

The other way around, right John? They have the axle further forward (closer to the centre of mass), which leads to tongue weight at a lower percentage of the trailer's total weight. Visually, they often appear to have the axle nearly centred under the body.

Escape tends to hit around 12% tongue weight (varies between unloaded and loaded, and by model), while the North American "rule of thumb" is at least 10% and Euro trailers run more typically 8% or even less. Strangely, I don't see tongue weight (which they would typically call "nose weight") in the Adria specs.

Yes, ABS is a thermoplastic polymer resin (which most people just call "plastic") and polyester is the resin in glass-fibre reinforced resin (which we usually call "fiberglass", and also shows up as "FRP" here and "GRP" in the UK).

The side walls appear to be "fiberglass" sheet, as is commonly used as an outer layer of built-up walls of conventional RVs worldwide... not moulded to the shape of the trailer. The specs don't say anything about the body structure.

So that means there are seams, which can open and leak. I had a T@DA which had it's roots in Europe with similar construction, they had leak issues.
