Wait it out if you have to. Be safe, you're retired and have the time!

They obviously did not mind taking your money though.
I don't consider it wasted money making an demonstrable effort to be legal. I've bought "rolling wrecks", one without a VIN, in WA and towed them back to BC. No concern at the either border about the permit so in similar situations I'd do it again.

Ron, I think what Cathy meant was that given the fact that Jake had 30 days to register in his state that he was legal even without the temporary permits. I may have to test out that same interpretation given WI law.

We picked up the trailer and towed it back for 2400 miles with no plate or registration of any kind. The fun started after I went to get it registered at the local DMV. Loren

Stop giving in to states treating people like ATM's! It is everyone''s right to avoid (not evade) taxes. WA state is laughing all the way to the bank for people who needlessly think as non-residents they need to pay a "transit tax".

Ron
You may very well have needed that permit due to buying in Washington.

Loren, you have now done your public service for the next owner. There are plenty of people who want an Escape but simply do not want to deal with their state on it because they expect to have your kind of situation. That is what our buyers thought in another state. So all of your trouble is your good deed for another owner.

Well, I think one person above was told this by Escape and I have tried to tell Escape otherwise. Buyers are looking for something to replace the plate that they cannot get, for travel when returning home crossing the country. I am quite sure that a Washington permit does not do that unless for a resident there.

Maybe Tractors can make a plate that will do, short term.
Stick a Canada flag on it and some numbers.

If you look at some of these requirements in various states, what I notice is that they are based upon someone moving to the state and having to register a vehicle within x number of days --- of entering the state. The number really has nothing to do with this trailer situation usually. A state has no interest or place to register a vehicle that has not entered that state. The number of days they are giving is actually for after the state is entered but it never seems to quite read that way, even though that appears to be the requirement.

If a vehicle is not yet in the state, they have no reason to want it registered, nor can they, as far as I see. They are regulating vehicles on their roadways, not somewhere else, even if you are a legal resident of that state. (You register a vehicle kept primarily in another state in the second state usually, not your legal residence state.) So the number of days should really apply after you enter your state. But just try to get your state officials to go along with that when they are looking at a set number such as 30 in their rules and you say you will be out there 50 days.

Tried that. When I entered the VIN Escape supplied, the website stated that an online could not be completed and to see local office.

That's very strange. Ourselves as well as many others have used the temp permit without issue.

Could this in any way be related to the problem ETI had a few months back with some of their VIN numbers not fully meeting U.S. VIN requirements, and the on-line application is catching this same problem in your VIN? I hope not, because everyone, especially ETI, wants that pain in the rear glitch in the system to be a thing of the past.

tdf, Have fun at ETI today and a safe trip home. I know it's been mentioned here before, but you will not have any problem with your unlicensed trailer. Drive safe and obey the law. In the highly unlikely event you are pulled over, don't worry. You have all your paperwork, your passport, and your drivers license. Nothing to think about, except enjoying the weather on the way home.

Safe Travels!

Leg #2 from Las Cruces to Phoenix went well yesterday. Don't gas up in Lordsburg, NM, as it is expensive .

You ain't seen nothing yet.
$1.35 a liter for regular in North Van. That's $5.10 (CAD) a U.S. gallon. About $3.83 US / gallon, if my calculations are correct.

Weather reports look so rough through this week in CA, just take it slow and cautious. Gas up in Phoenix, even cheaper right now than it was in N AZ last week.
