2017 5.0TA Porch Light Red Replacement Cover

Hi folks! I'm staying for the winter in a dark skies community and would like to replace the cover on my porch light. The clear cover makes the light much too bright. Red would be ideal since it won't interfere with the astronomers and their astrophotography around me. Any suggestions on where I might source such an item? Thanks in advance!

You can replace the LED lamp with a less lumen and different color replacement. SuperbrightLEDs has a good selection. https://www.superbrightleds.com

Hi Sarah, we went with the amber too, it cuts the light way down but leave plenty to see where you going near the trailer. Might get the pt# from ETI, they are the ones who provided ours, of course ours is a 2014.

I'd think any RV parts shop could help if you pulled the old one.

Phew!........

Sarah, I’m so glad they call it a dark skies community and not a ‘red light district’.

Astrophotography and an amber lens isn't sufficient.

You're right, my bad. The astrophotography part didn't click.

The cover does not get very hot. Perhaps you could check with a local theatre company and get some plastic film like they use In play productions etc. we used to get red cellophane to hunt night crawlers, the flashlight didn’t scare them in as easily. Maybe a hobby store?.

We spent some time in Big Bend NP in Texas which has a dark skies designation. The big thing I noticed there is that all the lights are down lights...all the light is aimed at the ground and is just as little as needed to get by....I would consider two things 1. get a bulb of lower wattage and 2. using foil or other metal make a shield that only allowed the light to escape down...be careful that you do not capture too much heat as that could be bad....another solution is carry a flashlight and don't use the light.

There are headlamps with red LED designed to preserve night vision:

Bright, compact headlamp for harsh conditions with a night vision friendly red LED - the high output 2750 LED Headlight provides up to 193 lumens of illumination, flashing, and low light modes. The 2750 also preserves night vision with the use of a red LED. ... Switch to the new 2750 headlamp from Pelican.BATTERY SIZE:
AAA

BATTERY TYPE:
Alkaline

O-RING:
Over-molded TPR

For the Dark Sky designation it is important to protect night vision but it is even more important to reduce overall light pollution thus directing light only where we need it. Check this out....Outdoor Lighting Basics

I tried some night time bass fishing this summer with a Petzl Tikka headlamp with the red led. Not enough light to do much of anything but cast.

We have attended several “Star Parties”. I have the bright porch lights on all 4 sides. All we did was take the lens off and I put red dog paw boots over the LED lights. It is really just a heavy duty / thick balloon. It works perfect, but only for LED lights or it could melt with regular bulbs.

Thank you everyone for the great suggestions! I also received a recommendation to try covering the inside of the clear lens cover with red tail light repair tape. I'm looking forward to spending the winter in the dark!
