21 Double Step and Light

Wifey has cranky knees; decided to install a double step. During that process I decided to add a motion sensor light (we camp year round in the Pacific NW.)

Light stays off with daylight, on for about 15 seconds. Battery powered (4AAA) so no wiring hassles. Has a magnetic mounting strip and separate metal mounting strip with double stick tape - put it on a removable mount so I can put it on the trailer when we camp and remove it when in motion.

Did you fabricate the step or find one that could be bolted on? I like the step!

Nice work Charlie, but I would add another light for the lower step based on the first picture, the step above creates a shadow.

There is a 2nd light. Being magnetic I'll just stick it directly on the upper step to illuminate the lower (if I need it.)

The step is an "almost" bolt on. It's a retail product that has to have the upper bar between the sides cut out so it can mount to the outside of the ETI outriggers instead of to the inside they ETI mounts theirs. I drilled 2 holes on each side of those for 3/8 bolts. Did not do any cutting on the ETI outriggers so I could put the factory step back if there were any problems.

Has the clearance, when retracted, changed any? Are the step covers included and what are they?

A bit less clearance, but still above the center of the axles. The lower step when open is 3 1/2 inches above the ground.

Step covers are cut from a large roll of indoor/outdoor carpeting I have and secured by tie-wraps that go through the holes in the metal steps; just made little slits that line up with the holes using my box cutter. Cheap!

One thing I heard at the rally was that the step up from the main stair to the door opening was a doozy.

Has anyone (Charlie?) modified the original system to get that distance reduced? Maybe a thick rubber mat piece to add height, combined with Charlie's extra lower stair?

I have used one of these as a "first step" initially but now leave it home. Folded up it gives you about 4" step. They have other models that are adjustable modelshttp://smile.amazon.com/Stromberg-Ca...words=rv+steps

Who makes the step and where did you buy it. I had ordered one from Flexco but the bottom step was too low, it would not extend all the way without hitting the ground and my local RV store could not suggest another option. I am all ears for your info, I just posted a "entrance step" post asking for ideas

Are you wanting one for your Casita? Little House Customs sells one already modified - I put theirs on my Casita; install instructions they provide are excellent. About halfway down this page:
