3 Watt Boosters Now 1 Watt

Tried to order another 3 Watt Wilson Amp as my son is doing some road trips and it really helped him last year in Colorado.

What I've found out today is that the FCC mandated boosters be limited to 1 Watt as of 4/30/14. The boosters mentioned previously like the Sleek and the 460108 are the new versions.

From what I heard today talking with different reps, these newer ones don't work that good. No wonder if they are 1/3 the power of the originals.

You can still find online some 801212 and 801201...essentially the same except the latter has a mag-mount antenna in the kit. Many outlets in U.S. will only ship these to Canada however, as they risk being fined otherwise. Inventory declining though as they aren't making any more at this time.

Am going to use the mag-mount on the trailer as I don't want to deal with broken masts and pulling new wire. You can attach a 3" diameter metal disc to the roof with 2-sided 3M tape or something for a ground plane for a mag mount. Always worked good on my car. Also the wire is so thin that you can easily close the door on it.

One consideration - the 801212 & the 801201 amps are 3G only. If you want to cover the 4G LTE frequencies, you are going to either go with the 460108 or the latest version of the Sleek.

I used the 801212 combined with the short trucker antenna for a year before I switched to a 4G data hotspot, and while it was great not to need to put the phone or device in a cradle, I switched to a Sleek when I added the 4G hotspot. The combination works as well or better than the older system.

From Wilson: "
Compatibility:
  • Supports all carriers that transmit at 824-894 and 1850-1990 MHz frequency bands only and works on all generations of CDMA, TDMA, GSM, and 3G
  • Works with 50 Ohm antennas and accessories
  • Does not support Nextel/iDen, Verizon 4G LTE, and AT&T LTE/AWS
  • Contact us before you purchase this item if you are unsure
Weird, with the booster I was pretty sure I was seeing 4G in the display at times.

In many cases where you need a booster, you're only going to get Edge (AT&T) or maybe one step up (4G) so you can make voice calls. Wifi under those circumstances is painful or impossible anyway.
