5.0 top step modification

Has anyone modified the top step in a 5.0 to hinge like the bottom 2 steps. I am wanting to re-carpet the steps and was thinking with a bottom added this would be a great storage area for my camp chairs?

Many of us have modified our top step. I made ours to have a removeable bottom/floor. With the bottom in place we store our shoes there. By removing the shoes and the bottom we store our rarely used 100 watt portable panel in the back of the lower portion, then reinstall the bottom for shoe storage.

Others have different uses for that extra storage area.

Look carefully at how the hinge is installed on the other two steps and it's easy to make the top open the same.

Enjoy,

Perry

My top step...

Attached shows what I did. We are able to store our outdoor folding tables in there. Quite a few forum folks have done similar mods to the 5.0 step. Good luck!

Padra, Thank you for the pics, that is what what I am wanting to do. Is the original step screwed down from the top under the carpet or screwed in from the bottom?

Yes, from the top. As you can see, I had some 1x oak in stock I was able to use. Also missing in the picture is a small chain on the right hand side that holds the thing open so one person can lower the tables in unassisted.
