Normally, you plug your shore cord into the generator. If you want an ATS there, it would do the same thing, connect the generator output to the shore power input

Wait, your talking about a big 5th wheel? This forum is for the molded fiberglass trailers made by Escape. We have 30A service, and no room for onboard generators....

John... Say it isn't so... A 2017 Heartland Arlington isn't a fiberglass

I'm not looking it up, but while it may be fiberglass (panels), it's not molded fiberglass.

If using two 2-source ATS in series to accommodate 3 'hard wired' power sources
  • Assuming the ATS are both labelled for "Shore In" and "Gen In' with shore taking priority when it's available
  • Assuming you want the 3-source priority to be shore, then gen, then inverter (battery / solar)
  • Connect shore and gen to ATS#1 as normal
  • Connect ATS#1 Output to ATS#2 Shore In
  • Connect Inverter output to ATS#2 Gen In
  • Connect ATS#2 Output to house AC distribution system
IF your system auto-starts the Gen in the absence of shore power, and you want to go to Inverter in absence of shore power (as at a "no generators" campsite), you'll have to manually stop the Gen start-up to force the use of the inverter source.

There are 3-source transfer switches available, too.

usually the inverter is behind the main breaker panel, as it only runs some loads and not others, for instance, you don't want dual rooftop AC units on an inverter, nor do you want your DC power converter (battery charger) to run off the inverter.... The inverter output goes to a transfer switch which is fed from the main panel, and outputs to a subpanel for the circuits that it does drive, such as microwave, and 120V outlets.
