Thanks for the compliment.

But to be clear, the rear box used the ready made Erikson luggage carrier.

I was set to build my own but since it was the perfect size and made from aluminum I went with it.

So anyone could take that platform and built any size and style box on the rear maybe even carry a vintage style trunk like the photo.

Hello All,
I had posted these pictures in another thread, when we bought are 2014 21C the previous owner had this custom aluminum box made and I LOVE IT. Now someone did note when I posted these pictures I need to vent it since propane tanks are in it (need to do that) but it really holds a lot of stuff.

Enjoy the road and stay safe,

Steve

Quick question. Any idea how much this box weights. Just curious as I’m looking to build one myself n replace the ETI custom storage box

Sorry really no idea and it's stored at our place on the lake so will be a couple of weeks before I see it so I could actually measure it for a good guesstemate.

I have an old one that I made years ago sitting in the shed. It's about the same size as the one pictured, just shallower front to back and it weights 25#. But it has 1/8" checker plate top.

Which raises the point: You could use 0.050" or 0.100" aluminum. The 0.100" would weight twice as much. It would be more resistant to being dented. So basically what gage you choose is going to be the major factor in what it weights.

I didn't want to pay for the storage box but I'm glad someone here talked me into it. Very happy with it. It just matches the trailer perfect.

Yeah, I don't get it. After 3 years of ownership that box cost you less than a dollar a day.

I also planned to measure the thickness but that would be the most difficult thing to measure since I don't think I have the device to do that. It is thicker aluminum and would take a pretty good whack to dent it. I will still measure it so you at least have the info.

Again, I love the box. I've seen the factory box and I don't like how thin it is, I have 4 different HDX plastic storage boxes and still plenty of room around them to stick other things. I have no idea what the tongue weight is but have been towing things for most of my life so can tell when driving if load is incorrect and never felt that while towing Grover.

Enjoy the road and stay safe.

Pick your thickness and dent risk and weight.

If it seems like you'd really have to give a good wack to dent it it's probably an 1/8" or thicker.

This box was 0.060", pretty dent resistant except if it come in contact with your rear bumper.

0.100" is a good compromise. If you want to bend it yourself use 5052. Up to 0.060" it's easy to bend yourself, after that throw a few bucks at a local sheet metal shop to use their brake.

Hi the Box you saw was probably mine. We own the "Caboose" I did the Saturday night Tech talk along with Johnny Hung at the Rally. Pm me through the fb group if you have questions.

I love the box too, and I have it, but for over $1000 USD now, I’d be looking all over for alternatives too. I could fabricate something, but many could not. For those folks, I’d be looking places like Tractor Supply or Northern Tool.

Has the storage box gone up any more %-wise than the trailer? Do you think any kind of after market box would be better?

It has gone up a little more than the trailer percentage since we purchased, and I don’t know of a better aftermarket box, just cheaper. For many, at some point it just gets too expensive. You might want something, but settle for something else simply due to cost.

Nice storage bin. I am curious as to why you never had it powder coated to match the trailer. I had that done and really like it. I know, to each their own.

What an awesome solution for a storage box for the 5.0! If we were going for a 5.0, I would definitely be interested in that. If it was not self-made, you may want to post where you got it.

I designed it and had it custom built out of aluminum and mounted to 2" receivers welded to the frame on each side.
