Awning Side Screen

A couple of years ago I made a pergola for our sundeck. My wife wanted to have the cover let some sunlight through so we ordered some mesh type fabric, about 45' of it.

It did reduce the intensity of the sun but it wasn't quite enough of a sunscreen for us. We replaced it with Sunbrella solid fabric which has proven to be the right choice.

So what to do with 45' of mesh fabric? We've hung smaller pieces off the awning but inevitably the sun finds its way around pretty quick. So I made a full length side screen.

I could have put tabs on the edge and used the readily available hooks that slide in the groove but I like the strength of a bolt rope. Having had lots of experience sewing up torn sails at sea I hand sewed in a full length bolt rope.

Works perfectly. The difference between sitting in the direct sun and sitting in the filtered sunlight is very noticeable. In one case you feel the hot sun on your skin and in the other case you feel the breeze on your skin.

Always nice to use materials that you already have and even nicer when it turns out exactly the way you wanted it to.

Nice job. We picked up one of the premade awning shades for use on our southwest trips, I don't have the skills to make one. Comes in handy when you need it, kind of like 4wd.

I'll keep that in mind next time I'm off road in Baja.
