Carpet, Doormat and Bathmat

I padded and carpeted my Escape with remnanrts from the local carpet store, it was very inexpensive. I used butcher paper and blue painter's tape to make a pattern of the floor and then taped it onto the back of the carpet laying upside down on the garage floor. You need to make sure the pattern is placed the bottom side up when it is taped to the back of the carpet so the pattern isn't reversed during the cut out.

I cut out the pattern with a utility knife and singed all the sides of the carpet with a torch (a cigarette lighter will work) to keep it from unravelling.

I used $1 carpet samples for a doormat and bathmat; a 27 x 17 inch piece made a great doormat and a smaller 17 x 13 inch piece fit perfectly in the bathroom.

The carpet samples had a lot of paper on the back, a piece of non-skid will keep them from sliding around.

The padded floor works out well, we don't wear shoes inside and it is nice to have a soft warm floor.

Thane,
Thanks for all the posts. There are some very good ideas that you have shared. I think that I might try the carpet idea and with remnants the costs will be about right. Also, if neighbors or friends or family are re-carpeting, sometimes there are pieces of the old carpeting that is not in bad shape that may be re-used. I carpeted my garage floor that way.

I have added carpet to the floors of any trailer I have owned, it adds warmth and comfort. I usually use a few pieces with the grain going in the same direction. It makes it easier to remove to clean.

Thanks for the nice words. I suggest adding a carpet pad, it really makes the floor warm. We don't wear shoes inside so the warm, soft floor is nice.

I have a carpet runner inside the trailer. On the road it keeps the BBQ and such from sliding around. At camp it goes outside so we can wipe our feet before we go inside.
I don't worry about keeping my feet warm in the trailer, since they are rarely on the floor.

Re: Carpet, Doormat and Bathmat

Thane, I have never bothered with the pad, mainly because of the thickness. In the trailer I have now, it would interfere with some lower cupboard doors opening. Is it safe to assume this is not the case with the Escape? Do you just leave the pad loose too, so it can all be removed for cleaning?

Baglo, for many years now I have kept a roll of good quality exterior carpet in the trailer for use outside while camped. It helps keep feet clean of loose dirt, and provides a great place for the dog to lay down.

During the day, as long as our shoes are relatively clean, we leave them on when popping in and out of the trailer, preferring to clean the carpets once a year instead of the hassle of removing and replacing footwear all the time.

The pad and carpet thickness is not a problem except you may need to raise the fire extinguisher mout next to the door. I didn't have to but it was a tight fit to get the fire extinguisher to fit it in the holder.

The question of Dri-Dek has come up a few times. We had it in our Casita and loved it. Since it has holes in it to allow the water to drain away from your feet, some don't like it (very tender feet may not), but I like drying off and not standing in puddles. We place a small white bath mat over it so it's warm for your little "tootsies" in the middle of the night, and just remove it for showers. When you get home from your trip, pull it out, and clean the tub floor, and you're ready for the next trip. Here's what it looks like in blue. (note the access for the drain plug - make sure it's tight if you have anything in your grey tank while traveling, or else you'll have grey water sloshed all over your normally dry bath- and wonder "where did that come from"?)

Very nice. Thanks for the picture. Perhaps a plug in the drain opening might help with gray H2O splash. Hopefully if ones does do that they won't forget to remove it prior to using the shower!

Hi Sandra,
The plug is still in the shower drain, the hole you see is the one I placed in the Dri-Dek to get TO the drain plug. The common mistake (usually only made once or maybe twice) is to leave your campsite with a gray tank half full, and forget to tighten down the plug. At your next destination, you find that your gray tank had "recycled" around your shower floor a couple of times wetting any rugs, etc, that you left in the floor for travel : - ) At which time, you are extremely grateful it wasn't your black tank!

Re: Carpet, Doormat and Bathmat

That plug sounds like a great idea - it comes that way from the factory, right?

Our '92 Casita did not have the shower drain valve that they added in later models and its drain is a wide one with holes that would not work with a plug. Well, first time we drove with a half full gray water tank, I didn't know what happened! My husband then installed a valve in the line (which you have to go outside to open or close, so if you've started to shower that can be embarrassing!) Anyway, I think the plug is a simpler idea.

Re: Carpet, Doormat and Bathmat

Hi Cheryls,
Yes, I remember our Casita. It had the hard to get to valve for the shower drain, and yes, I've done both, left it open, and left it closed (usually it was my wife who let me know the water was now over her ankles). The Escape has a simple screw down, screw up drain plug, that's standard, and easy to do. You just have to remember to do it : - )

Re: Carpet, Doormat and Bathmat

At Canadian Tire I found a roll of 20 inch by 6 feet Supreme Easy Liner for our bathroom floor, shelf liner but thicker and wider. Nice and cushiony, machine washable, easy to hang out to dry, comes in several colours. The bathroom floor in a 19 footer is not square as the wheel well comes up a bit beneath the sink.

Re: Carpet, Doormat and Bathmat

I am curious as to why a mat is used in the shower at all. Is it to stop slip? We have a fiberglass shower stall at home, and a fiberglass tub in our existing trailer that we have no issues with. Just reasoning it in me wee heed, the mats in the shower seem to be more of a pain then of value, therefore I'm sure I'm missing something. (Other then a few brain cells, that is )

Re: Carpet, Doormat and Bathmat

We use a bathmat primarily because we don't wear shoes inside and the floor is cold, but also helps keep the floor clean.

Re: Carpet, Doormat and Bathmat

We never use the shower but for those night time trips to the bathroom it's nice to have something warm and soft under our feet. We also use the shower for storage when we're moving so the non-slip pad stops things from moving around and keeps the floor clean.

Good points, I could definitely see the warmth benefit, as well as protection for storage. I just knew there had to be some good reasons I wasn't seeing.

Big difference, is you don't wear your shoes in your shower at home. You'd probably put something down if you did But, I'd think if anyone is standing in water in the shower there's something wrong that needs to be fixed. Putting something down to elevate yourself is not addressing the draining issue. Whether you use something or don't ... it's a matter of choice and isn't it nice we get to make one for ourselves.

Re: Carpet, Doormat and Bathmat

I think the advantage of something like Dri-Dek is to be able to shower, then dress (assuming one has shielded one's clothing) without leaving the compartment and then do the chamois or squeegee work afterward. (including under the dri -dek)

That's correct Sandra. When you finish showering, the water drains away from your feet so you can dry off inside the shower (our towels are on suction hooks behind the shower curtain). We place a small bath rug over the dri-dek when not showering, to comfort the tootsies in the cold of night (the shower floor can be cold, brrrrrrrrr). When we shower, we just place the rug outside the shower to step on when dressing outside the shower. We normally only chamois under the dri-dek after we get home, but each to his own. And, as someone has noted, the dri-dek (or another mat) protects the shower floor from your shoes when you use the bathroom during other times.
