E19 cubby

Not from dire need, but from pandemic boredom, I made an insert to go below the furnace and utilize unused space.

Measure twice, cut once. Yeah, yeah.

I got an idea of what was behind the paneling with removing the propane detector and looking in and taking a depth measurement. I made the cubby and then took oscillating saw to the paneling. What I couldn't see (lost my X-ray vision long ago) was a 2" diameter black plastic plumbing pipe on the far right front corner of the opening. No injury done with the cut-out, but it did mean that my cubby was too wide. Back to the table saw, snip snip, and it looked like it would fit. 2 strips were epoxied to the rear to support the cubby insert during installation. I got it in place, but a bit of a cobble job with visible fasteners holding it in place. And so it goes. I may use the plastic button covers on the fasteners, or not. Insert is not centered, but no good options to change that other than redoing the whole shebang.

This project has cured me of any near term need to utilize hidden space.

Very nice. I don't think I have the carpentry skills to pull that off but maybe some day.
I get nervous thinking of putting even a small hole in the paneling.

Nice idea. Looks good. Want to also cut once. What would be the best cubby dimensions, given the pipe?

Cubby

Your Gen2 rig may be different.

My insert was 11.5" deep, 8" high and 11.5" wide. Problem for me was the width. I pulled it off, but just barely.

You don't really gain a lot of space, but some utility now where there was none.

If you can get a camera or a cell phone video of the interior before cutting, you can get a better idea what and where is there. There is wood framing that was very near my paneling cut-out. Check that out.

Nice cubby.

Anybody with a late model trailer may want to look at this link which explains what I found behind the wall of my 2018 model 19. Two gas pipes in my case ran in the area, both of which I could see by removing the detector. It would have been nice if they were not there as they would interfere with installing a cubby. However for what I wanted to do it is not that much of a problem and well worth the effort to make a hiddy hole.

Nice work on your cubby. That is the bathroom sink drain pipe with a vent that extends upwards that some have found open ended. It might be a good idea to check if it has an air admittance valve (AAV) aka cheater vent. Some (early?) 19's appear to have one from the factory (ours does) but not all trailers. This thread covers it:

Escape model differences

I did not have 2 gas lines in this area...only 1 copper tube supply that was not in the way and to the left of the opening. Electrical wires in there too, but my insert cleared them easily, as they had plenty of slack.

Any trailer rig build-out will differ by changes in a components availability, code practices, manufacturing practice, state-of-the-art, etc.

Don't assume anything. I keep re-learning that lesson, I assume.

Finishing up

I got around to dealing with the unintended face frame fasteners on this project. I removed the construction screws, countersunk the holes, replaced with beveled head screws and capped the screws with "Fast Caps". These are wood discs, pre-finished, with adhesive backing and are about 1/2" diameter. They come in 70 varieties and I got mine at a big box supply store. An improvement in appearance.

Nice project and good work.
Might double as a good bread or sock warmer in the winter months.

You are a skilled craftsmen, Habberdabber. Looks very nice. This however, reminds me of a request we put in to Escape for our 21 build. Our furnace vent has 2 drawers located just above it. We asked if those 2 drawers could be switched out for one large cabinet, in that same area instead. The response we got was a firm 'no', because we were told that the furnace needed a certain amount of ventilation all around it for it to operate safe and well according to the manufacturer...and a cabinet so close to it would void the warranty. Thus, you may want to double check your furnace specs to ensure adequate ventilation and safety. Hopefully you are fine. -Bea

The furnace sits on a plywood shelf that completely isolates it from the area below where the cubbyhole is.

Funny you should mention that. Mine holds 20 rolls.

I find when describing an area such as this, people can relate to the T roll.

Trash in cubby area

Removed our CO/Propane detector beneath the furnace to see what useful space we have. Guess what we found?

Sure hope that PEX clamp isn't supposed to be on a fixture?

We have this black hose on left side, which we think is propane to heater.

We have the black vent pipe on the right side, along with more trash.

Will provide useful storage, once we clean it and reroute some wiring.

Anyone know what the blue wire might be?

Will let ETI know about this lack of quality control and poor craftspersonship. This trash should not be left in anyone's build.

Wow, what a mess. I'm getting ready to open mine up and hope I don't find similar.
Blue wire is normally brakes.
Where are you relocating propane detector?

Ahhhh...the "classics"

I found nothing amiss or left behind in my project. You do have some questions to be asked and answered. Shouldn't happen.

I put my sensor back on the door I made for the hole. However you could put it over to the left.

How did you run the wires? I don't see any for all the items you added to the front of the door in this post: https://www.escapeforum.org/forums/f...tml#post276671
