MyronL built a nice looking step. http://www.escapeforum.org/forums/f8...19-a-2883.html I am in the process of building something similar because my older Golden Retriever always tries to leap all the way in from the ground and struggles with this.

Here is a resource - halfway down the page part #77412 is a double entry step that is 21 1/2 inches wide - would that work?

I looked at that one but the hole pattern is different, I did not want to drill more holes.

Comment on ETD (Elkhart Tool & Die) about their steps.

"Will a double step fit in place of my single step? No, because of the movement required to make a double step work, it is wider than a single step and has an entirely different hole-pattern.

It is not very common for different styles of steps to be interchangeable without modification. A double step can’t work in place of a single step; a triple step can’t replace a double step, and so on without some sort of modification work to adjust mounting points and possibly other things, such as skirting or other interference's."

I'll post what I come up with. I have found a 20 inch double step that should work (ETI outriggers are at 21 inches) and I have Larry of Little House Customs tracking down a solution - we do a lot of business together, and he works on Escape trailers now and then.

Here's the one Larry (Little House Customs) installs on Escape trailers (model 920):

Elkhart Tool and Die : Double RV Steps : Custom RV Step Manufacture Since 1954 - Made In The USA

Amazon sells it:

Dave, I'll let you know. Should fit fine as I measured your outrigger spacing when I was there. Little House Customs installs them on Escapes, so if ETI won't do the substitution I will do it when we get our 21 home. Installed the same type double on my Casita, the bottom step flips up on top of the other one and it slides in just the same.

If I have to I'll make a transition plate with two sets of holes - one with the ETI pattern to mount it and a 2nd set of holes to mount the steps. No new holes required in the trailer.

Are you getting the spray foam underneath? When I mentioned the bolt pattern, there are only 4 on the Escape whereas this unit has six and there isn't room for the other 2 holes/bolts on the stock supports. You may want to wait until taking delivery.

No foam here. I'm waiting for a response from ETI whether or not they will substitute on the initial build (with fingers crossed.)

Here is a posting from 2010 showing how we solved the problem:

Just one more thing to pack. Retired engineer here, I'll either find or build a double step for our 21.

If anyone would be willing to measure the distance from the ground to the top of the step on the 21 and let me know, that would be most appreciated! If I missed that somewhere, my apologies.

Thanks much!

Dave, I have ordered that step. Reace doesn't want to install it, but here's a comment from Larry (Little House Customs) who does install it on Escapes. Will let you know how it goes.

Just wondering if getting a single step with a bit more of a drop might be better. I have set up in spots where due to the unevenness of the site, that a second step would be nice, but as well, I have set up in places where the single step is closer to the ground than the step up to the trailer.

Maybe though, if you were mostly camping on nice flat sites, you could find the perfect step for the overall drop.

Actually wifey has problem EXITING the trailer with the big drop to the first step - no issues on entry. Surgery on both knees already, hence my quest for the double step instead of a stool.

I am interested to see the double step in place.

We had Reace install a grap handle on the inside(just below the light switch as you enter the trailer) to aid in exiting the trailer and it works out very well. Might be helpful to go along with your second step.
