It appears if you throw enough money and time at it, you may have a workable refrigerator. At the same time there are some owners, perhaps purchasers toward the end of its cycle, who have not had as many issues. I would guess there may have been less than 100 installed in Escapes. Many came as warranty replacement refrigerators for another POS from Dometic, the RML 8555 6.7.

I certainly share these sentiments. Ours was changed under warranty when Reace finally prevailed and got Dometic to replace them. It's been reliably mediocre, which is better than the original. I agree that the original installation was far from what Dometic specifies, and since ours was swapped out locally, nothing has improved in that regard. These more recent posts have me thinking about pulling it out and upgrading the installation. I'm just concerned that after doing that, the control board will die, and it will have been a wasted effort.
Friends installed a smaller NorCold unit in theirs, which was one of the few that fits through the original curved doorway.

Hi Parker, which NorCold model did your friends find to replace their Dometic RM8551? The one that fits through the curved door? I have a 2014 17B.
I've replaced my RM8551 with a 12-volt compressor fridge, but I might want to go back to propane at some point.
Thanks in advance!

Hi Andy,
I don't know other than to say they told me it was much smaller, but after all their troubles with Dometic they were just going to go with it. I looked on the NorCold site, and I suspect it was something smaller than 4 cubic feet. I'll try to find out and let you know.

Hi Chris,
I just sent you a PM with questions about your modifications of the cutout. I have the other thread going about replacing my RMD 8555, and want to do some of the modifications you have already done before installing the new fridge.
Thanks,
Paul
