If I were concerned about the generator getting stolen, I'd probably get a Low Pro instead of using cables. You can't cut a generator loose from a Low Pro with bolt cutters. Cleaner look as well. Of course, pricey.

Ok, after over 500 miles on every type of road, interstate to twisty mountain two lanes, here are my thoughts on the generator/rack on the back of the Escape 19.

As configured, I saw absolutely no difference in handling. Trailer still tracks like it's on rails.

Change in tongue weight appears to be negligible. The van still drops, visually, the same amount. I should have done before and after measurements.

Offsetting the generator to fit in a gas tank doesn't negativity affect the balance.

On Friday night, we stayed in a sketchy Walmart parking lot in Lakeland FL. My generator was still there in the morning. Luck? Maybe. We even left the generator running, on the rack, locked up, while we went shopping.

Hope that answers your questions. If not, fire away. We'll be traveling until early October.. I'll post updated if something changes.

I don't doubt that the suspension height difference isn't noticeable. The physical reality is that adding 100 pounds sitting a foot beyond the rear bumper takes roughly 30 pounds off of the tongue weight. It's a simple leverage situation; exact values only require two lengths to be measured (ball to axle and axle to middle of the added load).

I'll trust your math. That said, I still don't notice any change in the handling of the trailer.

I forgot to mention that I have to run the refrigerator on propane while running the AC. Otherwise, it over loads the generator.

Not surprising with a generator that has about 1800 running watts. The AC would take up most of that.

I'm good with such a situation however. I would only carry a smaller generator (1800 to 2200 watts) and my only reason for doing so would be to run the AC.

We'll, we're back home after our Midwest Tour. After 4,550 miles, traveling through 11 states, sleeping in 10 of those. We stayed in a mixture of RV parks, Walmarts and Cracker Barrells. We left the trailer unattended at many stops for groceries, meals and sightseeing.

I know this will come as a shock to some of you, but my Honda EU 2000i is still on the rack on the back of our trailer. Our friend's, that traveled with us, Champion 3,500 watt is still on his rack

As stated previously, we hit every type of road imaginable and the Escape handled beautifully, even in one emergency swerve to miss a retread coming from under a semi truck.

In my mind, this solution worked well and will continue to be the way I carry my generator in the future.
