For the eBike, a 12 V DC to 48 V DC charger (with roughly 5 amp output) would certainly be the slickest and most efficient solution. I looked for a similar 12 V DC to 24 V DC charger for our mobility scooter. Unfortunately, these are not commonly used and so are very expensive... hundreds of dollars.

An example:
Powerstream: 12 DC Input 48V battery chargers for power plants and electric vehicles US$850
A 12 V to 24 V charger (with 5 amp output) from the same company can be under US$200, but the 48 V output is less commonly needed and so it is more specialized product.

Thanks Brian. You actually did more homework on this than I. My charger was ~$50, so the warmth I feel from inefficiency while touching it is just another cost of a silly retirement camping frill...
