So you’ve been happy with the 9500? Its specs say it is made for cooling up to 400 sq ft…slightly smaller than our 21’s, if I’m doing my math correctly. Houghton also makes a 13.5K. Rated up to 650 sq ft of cooling. Sounds like you’d see that as overkill? Thanks!

I wonder how many put in the 13.5K, & what sized trailers? You can't get the heat strip in the 9500.

We didn’t care for the heat strip in an ac . Ben there and found it not efficient enough. The 9500 cools our 21 down perfectly. The furnace keeps us quite cozy n momma is very cold natured. When have found the need for heat n not have to use the furnace, we use a small oil heater works great.

The Houghton units with heating are heat pumps not electric resistance strip heaters. Big difference.

The end connected to the current thermostat only has three black wires: 12+, 12-, and COMM. I gather yours, with the red and blue and black wires, was different?

Thank you. Your thermostat wiring appears to be different from my (older) set up.

Sorry to keep bugging you, but I think I’m getting closer to figuring this out, and now know better what questions to ask. You note that there are two red wires in the control box. Did you connect BOTH of them to a blue wire to the thermostat, or just the one from the batteries… or does it matter?

From the wiring diagrams I’ve seen there is only one black wire. Does that sound correct?

Thanks for your patience with wiring naïveté!

It doesn't matter, there are 2 sets of black and red, I used the heavier gauge. Just making a loop from the thermostat to the heater and back to the thermostat with the thermostat as a switch. Stan

I ended up calling Dustin and he talked me through the wiring connections to make the thermostat work. Took him just a couple minutes to explain.

I’m going to rely on the local mobile RV repair person. Sadly, none of my wires are colored as described (no blue to be found anywhere). And I don’t understand how to plug the thermostat wires (12+, 12-, and comm) into the alphabet soup on the new thermostat (G,Y, Etc). I’ve blown three fuses trying to do what I thought I understood others had done!

Glad you got it to work for you!

HVAC wiring

OK. I’m going to take one more stab at at least understanding what these wires do…though as noted, I’m waiting for a professional before I go crazy or blow the trailer up! Posted below are photos of wires going to the control box and photo of the wires attaching to the thermostat. From what I can tell, there are 6 wires at the control box that I may care about when trying to get the heater to work independent of the AC: the two wire plug to the left seems to go to the T-stat, and the 4 wire plug seems to bring power to the control box, and perhaps then off to the heater? The two wire plug (blue) to the right appears to be an external temperature monitor. Anyone who can clearly explain how I can isolate the heater and have it work independent of the AC will win first prize. Extra credit for explaining how to wire the T-stat (which named port does each wire go into: R, G, Y, etc?)with the three available wires noted.
