Looking Glass

Hi: All... I added a full length mirror to the outside of the 5.0's bathroom door. Purchased from Zellers wood look frame and held in place with strips of No More Nails from Home Building Centers. One season of camping and it's still stuck there.

Re: Looking Glass

I think I know the mirror you're talking about. I've got two of them.

I removed them from the frame and then screwed them, using mirror clips, to a vertical lath wall at the end of my garden. I added a round one and an oval one. I plant my tomatoes in front of them so they get sun from both sides.

When it comes to camping, I can't remember ever looking in a mirror......

Did you put it on the inside, or outside of the door? I am not sure if inside is even viable, as I don't have an Escape yet, and can't remember what the inside of the door is built like. I think if it was on the inside and still usable, it would be better, at least for my preference.

I so hear you, I tend to let myself go scruffy when camping, not a great sight.

The stick trailer we have now, until the 19 is done, has mirrors all over the place, behind the shelf at the entry, on on wall behind on side of the dinette, a full length on the outside of the bathroom door, and one above the bathroom sink. These are all stock too. Way too many in my book.

I just bought a mirror 14" x 48" and plan to place it either on the bathroom door ( outside ) or on the panel next to it. It weighs a few pounds. I bought a tube of No More Nails and read the instructions, for once. It says " not suitable for fixing mirrors " .
I don't know if they mean "affixing" mirrors or repairing a shattered mirror. It suitable for metal and glass ( as long as one surface is porous ).

Can I get an update on your experience with the products before I commit to this?

Re: Looking Glass

Hi: gbaglo... I used "No More Nails" to afix our mirror on the outside of the bathroom door. I used the tape type with the peel n stick. The mirror I bought was a metal frame oak look from Zellers so I put the tape on the back of the frame.
So far so good...its been a year now. Alf p.s. some solvents may affect the silvering on the back of the glass.

Re: Looking Glass

Hi Glenn

I glued my mirror to the inside of the bathroom door with Titebond, but you
can use any construction adhesive, never use silicone as it will eat into the mirror backing.

What you have to do is put about 4 loonie size shots of adhesive per square foot
and then secure the mirror with tape or prop it in place with something for 5 days.
The time needed for the glue to set completely and not shear when the support is moved.

I install mirrors like this all the time at work.... no problems

Re: Looking Glass

I Googled and found a company that sells No More Nails for attaching the mirrors they sell. I think it is a latex product ( my recollection ), not silicon. I plan to apply the adhesive and use the mirror clips provided, but with 1/2 inch screws. I found the LePage web-site quite useless. The instructions on the tube are more comprehensive than what's on the site. From all I read on different sites, I gather the issue with attaching mirrors is LePage avoiding liability, should one fall. I'll have to confirm that's it's not silicon based.

Thanks.

Re: Looking Glass

And, now I'm back to square one. The mirror I got is an "art" mirror, as in it looks like waves, turned 45 degrees. And, I'm thinking, what if I decide I no longer like it? What if I want to sell the trailer?

I think I'll mount it in the garden with my other mirrors.

The Old Bag is perfectly capable of reminding me that I didn't shave.

Third thoughts. Why not just do what you want to do? Anyway here's a pic of the mirror and the intended target.

Re: Looking Glass

Hi: gbaglo... Thats a very nice mirror. Here is a product link to what I used on our Boler to glue a mirroron the closet door.www.mulco.caMirror adhesive( non-corrosive). That mirror stayed stuck even when the door fell off the closet. I got it from my local Glass& Mirror dealer. Alf

Re: Looking Glass

Here's what I did. I bought a mirror that was roughly the size of the rear of the closet door. I then took an exact measurement of the indented back of the closet door where I wanted the mirror to fit flush. I took the mirror to speedy auto glass and had it cut to fit. I then used double sided tape plus four normal plastic mirror tabs to hold it in place. It looks great and can't fall off. Now my wife can open the closet door and sit on the bed and do her hair looking in the mirror.

Re: Looking Glass

I've decided to do the smart thing and install the mirror in the garden instead of in the trailer. And, no, I haven't shaved today.

Re: Looking Glass

In addition to the mirror breakage factor, I understand that the weight is a concern vis a vis the hinges on the bathroom door. I don't think its a recommended addition. However, maybe there is a way to augment those and eradicate that concern.

Re: Looking Glass

We have decided to install a small mirror to the left of the bathroom door on our 19. I am putting heavier hinges on the door and will have a couple coat hooks there.

Originally I was going to do that the other way around, but the bulk of the coats at that corner would make entering that side of the dinette tougher.

Besides, we hang most of our coats on the outside of the trailer by the door.

Well it took awhile to get the camera out.
But this is where I glued my mirror for the bathroom.

No just plain old construction adhesive (Tite Bond), but Franklin or PL Series will
work as well. The trick is to prop it into place and leave it for 5 or 6 days
until the adhesive cures.

Re: Looking Glass

Oh forgot to mention its just a piece of 3mm mirror
so it shouldn't cost more then $10.00 from your local
glass shop. You could also ask them to put a couple
of pieces of foam tape on the back to help hold it
in place until the glue sets.
