Magnetic knife rack

Wonder how much of a jolt it would take to shake them loose. I think the two magnetic bars might do the trick to keep everything in its place. Love the look.

I've driven 45 minutes of washboard without losing a knife.
And Chuckster, I think they are more likely to stay in place if you have the handle up, so that the knives can't work their way down.

I do them blade up because my step father installed (he is a sailor) them and he said it's the right way but either way seems to work well depends on your preference.

I can't see that, especially on a boat, where a wave can suddenly cause the boat to lurch up. I like the blade pointing away from me, but also the haft, when blade down, comes up against the knife holder, restricting movement.
I'd like to hear his argument for blade up.

I'm good with blade down. And facing away to the outer wall. Of course I stagger once in a while. In the packinghouse we carried them in an aluminum scabbard and usually wrapped in a greasy paper towel to avoid rust. The studs used high carbon steel. The rookies went with stainless with plastic handles.

Have to update my magnetic knife holder with new better knives. Grocery store had a promotion where they gave away Jamie Oliver knives for collected stamps. Already have good Wusthof knives at home, so they ended up in the trailer.

As to blade up or down, reminds me of my biology teacher in Africa who told the class that the roots go down 'due to gravity pull'. Stem goes up 'due to opposing gravity pull'.

Ours have been fine for years, except for the smallest one which fell off when I didn't see a speed bump going about 25 mph.....

We travel with the points up, since if the knives shift due to vibration, the ferrule/taper between the blade and the handle might act as a wedge to force the handle away from the holder. I'd rather the handle hit the counter than a point.

Gbaglio, how did you mount yours?

I used double-sided tape to mount it, but the screws you can see are required to hold the knife holder together. So, I drilled small holes and measured the distance to the shower liner ( in my case ). Then I cut the screws down so they wouldn't penetrate the shower liner. Been there for eight years.

Most knife racks show them blade up and say it safer but it depends on how high your rack is /or how tall you are. for me to reach up to grab the handle over the blade would be awkward. I agree they might be more stable blade down but mine stay in place facing up with no issues.

I'm just getting this mental image of opening the trailer door after a long day of travel and finding knives stuck in the walls, lounge table, bathroom door.

Paula worked at Williams Sonoma for a number of years when we were moving a lot due to transfers at my job. Between the employee discount and manufacturer promos, plus old discontinued stock room finds, we outfitted our kitchen with some quality cookware and cutlery. I love to cook, so I'm also a sucker for a sale on a good knife. I use a 6 inch chef's knife at home probably 80% of the time.

My wife worked at Ming Wo, a kitchen supply store for years. I too use the 6" chef mainly, but I had to get an 8" first ( a man thing ) and I have a 12" Sabatier that was used by a friend's dad when he was cook on a tugboat.
Have a $150 stainless wok, that I just had to buy, because I got a discount. Haven't used it in years, but it was excellent for southern fried chicken. Came with a draining rack mated to the wok.
