My take on a spare tire mast mount
Greetings all!,
In the land of covid-19 and Distance Schooling has encouraged the install of a WeBoost 65 on 7th Heaven.
I think I have viewed just about everone's posting on mast mounts. Some have come up with some very good installations unfortunately I felt that none fit our use case.
I'm motivated to add an additional solar panel to the rear roof just to be able to get an additional stabilizer for the mast ... But I digress
Still a work in progress but this is what I have come up with for a easy setup and removal of the mast. There is still a bit of play so I'm going to get a few end caps and bore out a hole to the exact fit of the mast diameter. ... also still looking for a pvc pipe with a better fit also...
Thoughts or comments from those who have gone down this path before are welcome.
Also if anyone was wondering about this product... it works well. I did a dry run in my driveway and saw a 30MB download and a 4MB upload improvement inside the trailer using the WeBoost Amp... I was very surprised as I only live 2 blocks from the cell tower!!!
Looking forward to see what it does in more challenging locations

Is this a drop-in (as in used while stationary) or are you going for a rigid mount? Many have used telescoping painters poles from Loews/Home Depot so it' easier to store when traveling. Here's some help on telescopic PVC fitups: https://flexpvc.com/TechArticles/PVC...ing-Pipe.shtml

Yes while stationary, the WeBoost 65 comes with a 24' telescoping mast 8).
The family dream is to be stationary and isolated during the week for schools and relocating on weekends.
Next on the list is mobile router/wf-fi solutions....

We use a phone for a hot spot; avoids the additional $25 device fee of a MiFi device on ATT. No problem with streaming video over it.

Being a man of many masts my advice is to make a sleeve for the mast so that it's a light sliding fit. I have several masts, including ones for the tilting swiveling solar panel and the 20' TV antenna mast and they don't require any higher up bracing. Just a good fit in the socket will do it. And aluminum tube is better that ABS.

i find that in fringe zones, my cellphone-as-a-hotspot gets significantly better data speeds if its way up in the air, which isn't very convenient.

Thanks Ron,
I'm currently on a quest for something with a 2 3/8" Internal diameter
I assume you rest the mast on the ground to support weight vs. having the sleeve support the weight?

I think this is high enough
With three kids on zoom calls for several hours a day. I'm not willing to give up the use of my phone

Fortunately I have a lathe so I can make a suitable socket.
No, none of my masts have anything but a socket. With a good sliding fit that's all that's needed.
My favorite saying after "add lightness" is "add height"

I've toyed with getting one of these,
https://www.netgear.com/home/product...ms/LB1121.aspx
and putting it in a plastic weather box with the optional high gain antennas, and putting that up on a telescoping past, powered off an ethernet cable down to my trailer, and using a standard wifi router inside the trailer to provide net... I've heard Google Fi will let you use these, without paying extra other than your data quota.. i'd need a 12V powered wifi router, and a 12V powered PoE injector to make it play the way I'd like, but thats all doable. and yes, I'd need to drill and install an RJ45 waterproof marine grade passthrough somewhere in the lower back of my E21. but thats easy enough. the wifi router would stay inside the trailer, I'd get the physically smallest one I could find that I can power on 12V and can run OpenWRT.

One of the reasons we go camping, is to get away from the incessant emails, texts, and news. No connections means peace and quiet.

I wouldn't add anything to the spare tire while in transit. On a cross country trip, we lost our spare tire, it broke right off at the base of the tube, 2007 17B. The weld was cold on one side, lack of penetration. I was only left with the bolt on plate. We have a new trailer, better design.

I am not into all the electronics, I go camping to get away , enjoy the journey, and destination. I will admit electronics are sometimes a necessity. This might be useful to some. They make a good product. I have the 22 foot pole and the bumper mount. https://polesandholders.com/Mounts-c52442728

This is the POE power supply I use with my Ubiquiti Nanostation WiFi station.
Ubiquiti makes an inexpensive combination router & POE supply - their Air Cube. It does require at least 2 amps of USB supply to enable the 24V POE...

Jim,
So glad to see you up and well and back posting again!!!
We couldn't agree with you more! We have been traveling around in our trailer for the last 6 years and leaving technology behind has always been a good thing. That said, Covid-19 and our current school learning situation allow us an opportunity to travel to places and distances that we would under normal circumstances wouldn't be an option.

Hi Jon,
What are you using for a unifi controller while on the road?

Me too.i got one of those after having spotted one at Lake Havasu. Not technical enough to manufacture a lot of rigging. This one works good for TV or just flying flags 22 feet.

I don't use Unifi, not even sure what it is. For anyone that desires isolation while traveling, I'm not the one to listen to. Since I update a journal every day when traveling, I want to stay connected.
I have 2 iPhones, both unlimited data, cover US, Canada & Mexico, one on AT&T, the other Verizon. I also have 2 cell modems (Jetpacks), both unlimited, and again, one on AT&T, the other on Verizon. Of course unlimited in both cases is a long way from actually unlimited, but between the 3 possible data connections ( the AT&T iPhone cannot be tethered), I've never run out of connectivity. During the last US cross country trip I only spent a couple of days without an internet connection.
I also carry a Ubiquiti NanoStation WiFi radio. It can be connected to an internal router, and the combination has provided a WiFi connection to a Loves truck stop a mile from the trailer. I rarely use it since cell coverage has improved to the point where it is almost always better & faster than WiFi.
