New window in our 17 B
We didn't get a window over our kitchen sink and have wished that we had. So, we finally decided to go for it and put one in. I contacted Escape to see if they would sell us the window but they were unable to do so. They were very helpful and gave us contact information for Lippert who makes them . I ordered the window and screen and they had a 3-4 week lead time before shipping.
In the meantime I searched for all the information that I could get about installing a new window where there hadn't been one before. There really wasn't much, so I decided to go ahead and give it a go anyways.
We located the position for the window on the inside and then I drilled holes so I could position the template outside. I cut the vinyl lining and the insulation away next. Then I used a saber saw to cut the fiberglass from the outside after using masking tape to prevent harm to the gel coat around the window. I captured most of the dust in the plastic sheeting that I taped around the hole.
Then I had to remove more of the insulation around the window to accomodate a rim of 1/2" baltic birch plywood to reinforce the fiberglass. This had to be glued in place. I used Loctite PL Marine adhesive sealant for this. Once the sealant cured I tried dry fitting the window and then made adjustments to make it fit.
Then it was time to install the window. I used butyl windscreen sealant around the frame of the window to seal the frame to the fiberglass. Kim made sure that the window didn't fall out when I went inside to screw the trim ring to the window frame.
And then it was done!
I have attached a series of pictures that I hope help illustrate what I did.
