He put a finish on them so they can be sat on without the paint wearing off.
Just love this. Do you know what the finish is? What a treasure to keep.

Thanks so much for all the nice words everyone :-)
I just read them to Pete and it totally made his day!
The finish he applied on the chairs is Golden Polymer Gloss Varnish with UVLS
He is going your start working on some impressionistic Escape paintings next.

He knows his materials, too. Nice to share the comments with him.

Oak Cabinets

I also dislike the oak cabinetry in the Escapes. I have ripped out every piece of oak in my home as I have remodeled it. I am almost ready to buy a new trailer, but am holding out and hoping ETI will offer another wood option. It would not take much to do when assembling cabinets, just 2 or 3 different types of wood stock to choose from. I also have thought about painting cabinets, but cannot justify putting all that effort in a brand new trailer. I like the Oliver trailers, but they are twice the price. Just my 2 cents. Rich.

Well, I like the oak. So I guess it's a stand-off.

And I don't really care all that much one way or the other. So there's another opinion. I'm just glad it's not all that dark stuff I saw yesterday.

Gotta agree on both points. How well the size and function suits our needs is the most important aspect. Everything else after that quickly becomes a non-issue with use.

Yah, those trailers of yesteryear with almost black-brown interiors. If I somehow ended up with one of those I'd soon have a paint brush in my hand.

I haven't changed the cabinets in an RV, but my suggestion is to avoid painting:
  • For the cabinet cases, I suggest following Mary's idea of some form of wallpaper, since paint over the stock finish will not easily provide the smooth and grain-free appearance that seems to be desired.
  • For the cabinet doors, I suggest asking Escape about omitting them; they have done this for other purchasers. They buy the doors completed (including finishing), so leaving them off would save Escape money and not require any more effort on their part... so there should be a credit. Even if the credit is minimal, it would be easier and produce a better-looking result to buy cabinet doors of the desired style and finish than to refinish the doors; it would take a lot of effort to completely obscure the grain of the solid oak doors.
Personally, painting out the solid oak doors seems like an almost criminal waste of good wood to me... but of course that's just my opinion.

Thanks for the advise Brian. Yes it wood be a shame to paint over good cabinets. I like the idea of the wallpaper, my wife has shown me several different patterns of "peel and stick", wallpaper, which is an option. In the end , I am going to order my trailer even if it is oak cabinets, as I can change it down the road. Thanks, Rich.
