Range Hood Light Upgrade

I thought I might document my upgrade to the range hood lighting. The little incandescent light bulb that can with the trailer was pitiful. It really needed some lighting improvement. The 5050 led's in a 6x8 array seemed to be the best choice so here it goes.

I purchased these:
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0...?ie=UTF8&psc=1

Pic 1: Here are the led's that I bought. They come two to a pack.

Pic 2: This is the light I want to upgrade. Squeeze the sides of the cover and it comes off.

Pic 3: This is the bulb we are replacing.

Pic 4: Squeeze the clip at the top of the connector and it comes off.

Pic 5: Unplug the bulb and plug in the led. Polarity counts so after plugging in the led, turn on the light switch and see if it works. If it doesn't light, unplug the connector, flip it and plug it back in.

Pic 6: Remove the backing from the foam and press the led to the metal tab. Tuck the wires out of the way of the fan and replace the frosted plastic cover.

Pic 7: Here you have the finished project. Don't look directly at the light - it is blindingly bright!

I did pretty much the same thing in my 19, and I don't know if it was the adhesive on the LEDs, or something to do with the heat in the hood, but they came unglued within a year. I taped them back up with strips of aluminum duct tape along the edges, and they held.

Definitely an improvement in the lighting, as you are right, the incandescent bulb is dismal.

Wiping the aluminum tab with alcohol prior to applying the the foam pad helps. That range hood is kinda oily.

With a modification could your extra array of smd's be used as the bulb for the outside light? I recall my LED interior upgrade did not include the outside light. I also recall that was the connector similar to an automobile bulb. I am sure there would be a method to solder or otherwise connect that remaining array into that fixture?

We just finalized and delivered our build sheet and handed it over to Sarah this afternoon. While looking inside the new 5.0, the DW decided she wanted the range hood (we omitted it in our previous 19). Many, many thanks for your timely contribution to her improved ability to see what I'm going to be eating!

Rich, congratulations on getting the build sheet in! Do you have a delivery date yet?

Sure do, Arnie; April 24. Will have Trademasters install the 5th wheel hitch rails in the morning and our Orientation is scheduled for that afternoon. Will likely stay at Tulalip on the way home. Starting to get excited!

That's great, Rich. A full month to get "acquainted" with it before the rally!

My ideal vent light would have 2 settings, bright one for cooking and dim one for night time.

Not the cheapest way to get 2 light settings but the SAM-1 hood upgrade includes that feature and is fantastic.

Before I did the SAM-1 retrofit I ordered a similar LED light as tdf-texas to retrofit into the Heng's hood. Never used it. Someone can have it for free if you want to cover shipping. It has the right adapter so it should be plug and play just as tdf-texas illustrated above. This is the exact item (it's unavailable now, but it was $14 at the time):

Tom - thanks for the info on the light. I was assuming that by now all the lights in the trailer were LED, but now understand that that is not the case. When we bought our 2010, ETI had just started offering LED upgrades that did most, but not all, the lights.

I had no idea someone else had done the SAM-1 conversion besides us. How do you like it? We love ours. Huge difference.

Mine is sitting in my parts department, awaiting the housing for it to be built.

Did they run a propane line for your stove or is that something you will have to do there, Jim?

That's one heck of an expensive housing (not that the exhaust fan was cheap) 😳

Good question, and something I noted too. It was supposed to be run, though it is not obvious in the photos, so I will be checking at orientation.

Robert, I really like it. Coupled with the Dickinson cooktop it is a 1st class galley. I posted some feedback in July in this other thread:
