Refrigerator Straps

We will be picking up our new 5.0 TA in two weeks. Our refrigerator door came open once on our Lance and have read similar problems on this forum and others. I remember someone here (I think) had a simple strap solution to keep their refrigerator door shut while in transit. What do you use? Pictures would be nice.

Thanks,

Perry

We don't use anything and have never had a problem. The new fridge door latches quite positively.

It really depends on your fridge model. The fridge in our older 17B lacked a positive latching mechanism, and did pop open and regurgitate its contents, necessitating installation of supplementary restraints. The fridge in our 2017 19, however, does have a positive latching mechanism that closes quite securely and requires nothing supplemental. Maybe wait and see your fridge in person then decide if you need to tweak it?

I decIded, why take a chance? This topic well covered over the years. Do a search for "fridge straps" postings.

Your refrigerator will have two options for opening and closing the door, Perry. You can leave the door ‘unlocked’ by depressing the hook/latch. This will allow you to simply pull on the door, and it will open like your home fridge door. Or, you can keep the hook/latch extended in the ‘locked’ position. This requires you to depress two buttons to open the fridge or freezer doors. The doors are very secure in this position and we have never had it open unintentionally. Some use the lock when in transit and unlock when in camp. We keep it locked all the time, so we don’t forget. Never had a problem

Smarty pants ! Meant door lock that requires you to push down 2 buttons to open door works real good . Never needed to add strap. Now got to be careful when you open door because items sometimes want to dump on floor after going down the road . Now that's another matter . Pat

I managed to bust that blue pull-out thing at the latch you use to keep the door cracked open but secure, for air circulation when not in use. There seems to be no glue that repairs it. Not keen on paying Dometic through the nose to replace that little thingo.

Understand Myron and believe me if ours broke ,refrigerator would get a strap . So far we have had good luck with plastic part . Your solution was a good one Pat

I'm going to put some footman loops on either side of my refrig and run a strap when i'm driving. Is there any concern about where on the sides i should put them (to avoid running into something important underneath? any recommendation on size (depth) of screw needed? Thanks.

Hi: MyronL... That blue square with the hook in it cost me $85. Canadian and had to come direct from Sweden. At least I didn't have to buy a plane ticket to get it here. Once I got it I was able to replace the broken spring inside it for two bucks. Now I have a spare so it'll never break again. Alf

Holy Swedish latch parts, Balfman! From now on I'll be using a dish towel and my door strap to keep the door cracked.

Here's my strap solution howman. Screw length really not relevant since corner framing exists there.

I'm not sure that you need straps. I thought the newer fridges have a locking system that works.

well, after at least 10000 miles last summer, mine has suddenly come open twice in the last month. it has a tab at the top to push as one is opening the door. if there's a locking mechanism, i'm not familiar with it.

my entry wall (left side of frig) is reinforced so i could certainly put a fastener there. i had forgotten about that as a possible location. also supposing i could wrap around the the dinette side of the refrig.

May depend on fridge model. Here's my no holes version in a 17B.

With the new fridge there is no need for additional straps, the site holds solid. And trust me, a few of us put that to the test a lot in the Baja.
