I rode that roller coaster several times in both the 50's and the early 60's before moving to Canada. Was it called the Big Dipper?

The Giant Dipper, also known as the "Mission Beach Roller Coaster," is a historical wooden roller coaster located in Belmont Park, a small amusement park on Mission Beach in San Diego, CA. The Giant Dipper was built in 1925. The roller coaster, along with its namesake at the Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk, are the only remaining roller coasters on the West Coast designed by noted roller coaster designers, Frank Prior and Frederick Church. Some celebration days, it is 15 cents a ride...

Thanks! I'll have to pass the site along to my BIL as he works for Seaside Co., the entity that owns the Boardwalk. (He may or may not know the Dipper's origin.)

I was prompted by the discussion to do a little research into our Giant Dipper. What stood out to me was that it was built in 47 days! In 47 days in Santa Cruz today, you probably still wouldn't even know which permits might be needed, and the Coastal Commission approval process would likely take 47 months before it was turned down.

This structure withstood the Loma Prieta Earthquake in 1989, which leveled most of downtown Santa Cruz, with only minor damage and was back in service two weeks later.

I travel to Santa Cruz and up the canyon a bit to Scotts Valley occasionally for work. It's very sad but true that you can't seem to go anywhere in Santa Cruz without a street person asking you for money. As beautiful as the coast is, give me Scotts Valley anytime.

And if they're not asking for money, they're scheming on how to steal your propane tanks, which is where all this started...

i grew up going to the Santa Cruz board walk and later took my children there. It was a lot of fun. I love Santa Cruz but i haven't been back in years -since my parents moved up here.

Seems very well made but $45 plus for a piece of metal seems pretty steep to me. Same price as an empty tank!

A reminder that you can just run the safety chains through the handles of the propane tanks and fasten with a padlock ( when you're not towing. )

Except on the 5ers. The tanks are inside, but with a door that doesn't lock... for safety reasons, I guess. Ten Forward stays in a storage yard. I'm not certain I'll make this purchase, but hooking up to go camping and finding my propane tanks gone when I got where I was going would set my hair on fire. Buying an item for $45 is cheaper than a hair transplant

I bought it direct from the company, $39.95 with free shipping.
The tanks I'm not as worried about. It's the damage they can do getting them.
Hopefully this will cause them to move on.

what did you buy wetzk? a Chain? I would not want Glen's setup bang clanging around on the road, needed something left on all the time, not willing to add another chore to my pre and post camp to do list either

The safety chains would not be used to secure the tanks when driving. They would be used for their purpose, as a safety device for towing.
The setup I show would only be used for storage and is cheap (cost of a padlock ).
That said, I don't bother, but my trailer is in my driveway.

No the device shown. I saw it on Amazon awhile back and went to the companies website for further information and noticed it was cheaper there. Only slight drawback is it will take a little bit longer to change out a tank.

That's what I did , drilled a hole , and installed a lock through the hole.
I did put a couple layers of foam around the body of the lock because the lock bounces around during travel and removes the paint off the tank leading to rust. Anyone with a 9/16 wrench can defeat the system , so the lock only slows thieves down a little.
