Surge protector

Does anyone know what make/model surge protector Escape uses if you add it to the build sheet?

Is it hard wired or portable, etc?

Thanks,

Dan

It is.

Also, although Escape calls it a surge protector, it really is an EMS. They do more than clamp a surge.

Yes, it is a monitor of your cg electric, if it is miswired then it will not allow the dirty electricity to enter your camper to cause damage. If it is over or under 120V range then it will not allow it to damage your trailer's electronic circuitry. Spikes and surges can happen far away from the cg and if it travels to your electric, it disconnects. If your area suffers from a brown out during heavy use times, it will disconnect, again to protect your trailer. It carries a lifetime warranty also. So when you plug in, it will analyze everything and after a minute or so, allow the electric to flow or shut it off. Well worth the cost.

From Progressive web site

Electrical Management System (EMS) helps to protect your RV against voltage fluctuations, power surges and incorrectly wired shore power which can cause sever and costly damage to RV appliances and electronics. Feel secure with multi-mode surge, voltage, polarity and lost/open neutral protection. Each unit includes a digital display scrolling continuously through the power source information. A state-of-the-art microprocessor provides peach of mind, day or night, even when you're away from your RV.

Gee, I wonder if there are flavor options. I'd sure like a citrus one, or maybe avocado.

Surge

We had a faulty 30 amp Service at Anacortes this past year and we were thankful the new to us 21 was equipped with an EMS. I’d consider this option as in the top three and even if the camper doesn’t have one, a portable unit would serve as well.

I added that exact same unit to our Casita years ago. It's my goto everytime we hookup. I really like knowing things are wired correctly, and if things go awry, it will take care of it. It's also pointed out the fact that many places have low voltage issues, not good for our new AC unit...also good to know.

The remote display doesn't come standard from Escape I guess. I may add one later, as it's very nice to know what's going on with the power situation.

We've had the EMS shut down power due to overvoltage issues at two campgrounds - both of which were resolved by moving to another site. No EMS means no protection from such conditions, and campgrounds are notorious for power issues. As others have mentioned, this option is well worth it.

Low voltage is one of the likeliest big problems, but by now, we have had most adverse conditions on the list. Plenty of campgrounds have problems.

Once though, ours was the only trailer that could use the A/C. The loop cleared out in very hot weather because no one else could use their A/C. Which makes me wonder if the problem people had was due to everyone using it! They left and when we returned, ours was working fine. Camp host couldn't believe it.

We had a progressive 50 amp on our class A. I was just trying to figure out what Escape uses to know whether to install it myself or have them do it.

Now that I know what they install, I'll just add it to the build sheet.

Thanks everyone,

Dan

Just so everyone is clear the picture Donna posted is from the ETI website and is the EMS-LCHW30 with the built-in display. The EMS-HW30C has the remote display. I believe I heard ETI now provides the unit without the remote display which requires you to go under a dinette seat to see the display data (scrolling voltage, amps, frequency and error code). This is supported by the pictures on the website no longer showing the remote unit. It is my understanding that a remote display cannot be added to the LCHW30. If that feature is important to you I would talk to ETI about possibly providing the HW30C or consider installing yourself after the purchase. I installed one myself since we bought the trailer used and it didn’t have one. You must have a spot to mount it where you can intercept the incoming power line. If you know where ETI would mount the unit on your particular model that makes it easier.

By the way the Progressive Industries website page for the LCHW30 says remote display under Product Features, but this is not correct.

On edit I still see remote display units in the “It’s Friday” thread. The stock trailer photos just may not have had the option installed. The above info regarding the change to the LCHW30 is probably not correct.

I guess I don't know how I would use it without the display. That is the first thing I look at after plugging in.

The EMS in my 2017 5.0 TA (delivered on 4/13/17) came with the remote display, however I'm not sure of the exact model and I won't be able to look any time soon.

The remote display is standard with the EMS option and is placed under a dinette seat, mine can be easily seen from outside telling me the status.

We put one in our 17b afterward , but had ETI install it in our 5TA. If I recall correctly the model without the remote readout - the display is built into the unit- you would need to look under the bench where it's located to determine the status/ problem.

If it has the remote display then it is the EMS-HW30C which is what Bob indicated in post #3. Thanks for everyone weighing in about how newer trailers are being delivered. Sorry for the confusion. The picture from ETI's website is outdated as it shows the model without the remote display.
