trimming window moulding to allow more opening

there are nice heavy rubber inserts at the end of the sliding windows that limit how far the window can open. if one trimmed them down so that they didn't extend beyond the curve at the bottom and top of the window frame, the windows would be able to open almost another 2", which on small windows is a large percentage gain in ventilation.
do they serve any purpose other than window stops? would there be any downside to trimming them down so that the window can open to just before where the frame starts to curve?
the track the window slides on extends that far so it seems odd that the window rubber piece would limit the opening so much. i'll post pix of the present situation and with the insert peeled back a couple inches.

Yes it certainly is.

I was under the impression by the way everyone was talking in other threads that the sliders provided way more air flow. In my mind I expect 50% of the window to open. I was obviously mistaken.

yah, even trimming back the rubber moulding they won't have 50% opening but, as a wild guess, it will increase from perhaps 30 or 35% to maybe 45%. it will also provide a less obstructed view. i also posted my question on the facebook escape forums and a couple guys had already trimmed or removed the moulding and they said it was a very noticeable difference in airflow. nobody has mentioned any downside from doing it so i will probably do mine shortly.

follow-up: i cut 2" off each end of the strips and reinstalled. the strips now stop the windows just before the curve, i.e. the moving window frame doesn't touch the set window frame. the extra 2" of travel increased the open area as follows:

Bedroom Window +12%
Kitchen Window + 28%
Dinette Window +33%

the moulding cuts easily with a pair of kitchen shears. very easy modification that should improve ventilation and unobstructed viewing.

Going a little sideways from this thread:
How does one get the screens out of the slider windows? The window get mighty dirty under the overlap.

Should be able to lift them up, pressing into the top track then swing the bottom in toward you, out of the bottom track.
