Since antennas and amplifiers can't even tell whether the signal is analog or digital, they are all "HD ready". Since many digital stations are in the UHF band you
do want an antenna and an amp which cover that band (unlike the old "rabbit ears") as well as low-VHF and high-VHF, but the UHF TV band has been in use since I was a little kid (several decades ago), so you don't need anything "newer".
The omnidiectional antennas (which are only workable with an amplifier) such as the
Winegard Roadstar series that have recently become popular are certainly a convenience.
