Weekend Minor Mods
I saw a device to hold the safety chains out of the mud but, when I saw the price, I thought I could do better. First I considered a spare piece of solid surface countertop material but I didn't have one quite wide enough. My scrap acrylic pieces weren't quite long enough. So then I moved to plywood: much easier to shape, drill and finish anyway. The commercial version has an extra hole for the umbilical which I didn't need. One hole for each chain, plus another for the brake cable is all I needed. Some sanding & sanding sealer and spray paint later, it was all done. Oh, and the 2 holes for the stainless mounting bolts, of course.
The other mod uses wasted space above the black tank in the street side front bench of our 19'. I built a simple plywood box to fit the available space, cut-to-fit an opening in the cabinet plywood and mounted the box with VHB tape. That way, it's removable for access to the black tank, if ever necessary. I painted the inside of the box black but any color would do. I trimmed the outside with some spare stained oak molding and called it a day. It's a great place to store an extra pair hiking boots, a spare stuff bag when parked or a bunch of other stuff. Maybe later, I'll add springy netting to hold things in place but, at this point, we'll use it just to stow accumulated extra gear at a campsite.
