12 volt fan fuse question.

I have a 12 volt fan in the bedroom that has worked fine for two years. First night out on this trip the 2 amp inline fuse that came with the fan blew when I turned it on. Replacement did the same. I tried a 5 amp fuse and the fan runs...seemed to struggle for a second and then got up to speed, cycled it a few times and it is working OK.

My understanding of electrical appliances and circuits is limited. What would be likely to cause this...a problem in the fan motor? Any risk in running it for now on a 5 amp fuse?

David,
I would first look to see if there's something in the fan, especially right around the motor shaft: fuzz, hair, spider web, ...
Next: did you hear any noise? I'm thinking bearing noise, squeak, whine, ...
I believe those bearings are sealed, but then, products aren't perfect.
have you had any rain, or moisture, in the fan area? A drop of light oil might improve it.

Edit: Re: 5A fuse. I'd run it. If it's the motor, any smoke or smell will tell you for sure, and the fuse will protect the wiring. But, that's just me. Officially, No.
