2019 Honda Ridgeline fuse issues with Controller.

So I just picked up my 2021 Escape. I noticed my charge controller was not on. My fuse for trailer charge was blown. When I replaced it all lights appeared to be on the controller. However the fuse keeps blowing and when it doesn't it won't charge while driving. Any advice is appreciated.

I have a 2019 Ridgeline (RL).

If referring the the RL's trailer 'charging' fuse blowing (fuse #11 in engine compartment fuse box B) you'll note that is rated at 20A (theoretically appropriate to protect the wiring in the RL, though IMO that wire in the RL harness is borderline undersized which can possibly 'de-rate' the circuit). That's the fuse for the circuit providing 12VDC nominal for powering equipment in the trailer and also charging the trailer battery.

IF you have approaching or more load than 20A from the trailer equipment (other than brakes or exterior run/stop/turn lights which are powered by different circuits) then that fuse should blow; if there's a fault in any of the trailer wiring for that equipment the fuse should blow; if you have a fault at the 7-pin connector related to that circuit the fuse should blow (dirt/debris).

Examples of trailer equipment which may overload that 20A vehicle fuse if running alone or in combination: the ETI OE Victron Orion TR Smart 12/12-20 DC-DC Charger for lithium battery; fridge on DC mode; furnace; etc. It may be possible to overload the RL circuit even with the non-lithium batteries if they are severely depleted and accepting a high current.

Note just because ETI installs a 20A DC-DC charger doesn't mean that your RL (or any particular tow vehicle) is capable of supporting it, particularly if your lithium battery is depleted and accepting a high charge-rate. I'm not familiar with that Victron DC-DC charger's configuration options but you may be able alter (reduce) its maximum charge rate to see if that eliminates the problem.

Hope that gives you some hints for things to look for, good luck.

PS - please do not consider installing a higher-than-spec (20A) fuse in your RL; doing so risks wire-overheating, insulation failure, and fire in your RL.

Thanks, not sure I'm smart enough to mess with the charge controller. What's disheartening is the Li battery is discharging rapidly. The first night I used the battery to dry camp it worked great. The next night it discharged rapidly not sure why maybe the controller.

It would be helpful to understand more about what is going on so maybe others can offer advice. Reviewing your forum history of 12 posts I find nothing about your new-to-you trailer other than mention of Li battery in the previous post ....
  • Is this trailer new direct from ETI will all original ETI components, or from a previous owner with perhaps other than ETI installed components?
  • What is the battery (how many?), solar (how many panels?), and inverter configuration you have?
  • What loads are you placing on the battery (what 12 volt devices are you using and how much / how long)? Are you running a compressor fridge? If not, are you running your fridge on propane? Are you running the furnace and if so, how much?
  • Are you using an inverter to power 120VAC devices (microwave? TV? Etc?) and how much? When not actually using the inverter are you ensuring it is turned off?
  • How are you charging the battery other than the (apparently non-functioning) DC-DC charger when driving (Solar? Any hookup to shore power?)
  • If using solar, have you had good sun exposure and for how long each day? Are you charging using the solar array when driving?
Yes. lots of questions, but all go to understanding you battery depletion situation and trying to offer relevant advice rather than random guesses based on incorrect / inapplicable assumptions.

There are likely folks who can help you here, but they need to understand the context of the problem to do that in a meaningful way

It's is new from ETI. No inverter or solar. I do have a compressor fridge and using a CPAP.
