well, if you were replacing the power cord on an appliance over 1800 watts up to about 2500 watts, you'd use that NEMA 5-20 rather than a NEMA 5-15 so it can't be plugged into a 15A outlet. I've seen 5-20 plugs on small MIG welders, for instance.

Well. this is embarassing! John reminded me of the NEMA 5-20 I have on my old planer. I have a matching outlet of course. Oh boy. I am in the hospital as I type this. so this is my excuse for my brain deficits.

Another example, I've got a roll-around air compressor that came with the NEMA 5-20 plug for good reason.

Of course after you have the 30/20 adapter, most folks don't carry a 12ga extension cord on the road.

I have a 30A RV to RV extension cord.... if I'm going to run the AC off a 15A circuit at home, I want to use as short a 15A cord as practical, and of course minimize other uses of electricity

or get one like we have..just a 2" plug w 30 amp female side (for yer cord) and 20 amp male side to go into yer garage wall/...works for us..we even run the AC sometimes while working on the 21 at home. Git that at WW also back in 2018
