5.0 Bed: Covers

ETI did a special for me and installed a full/double mattress instead of the standard queen. I did this because I don't need the width and it gives me additional space at the sides for storage (hopefully for my outside shelters (Clam & Eurmax).

But this means that the foot of the mattress is not jammed against anything, making it so that the covers come loose at the foot of the bed fairly easily. I'm assuming more easily than with the std queen mattress.

Any suggestions besides putting sheet garters on everything to help keep the covers in place? Maybe a brand of sheet that includes the top sheet being fitted at the bottom? Queen top sheet to have more for tucking?

Best laid plans sometimes causes other issues. Why do you want to carry dirty items like your pop up clam and eurmax next to your bed and will not this extra weight impact your pin weight?

The pin weight is only a concern for folks running near their max, for others it's not.

Don't know about you Tom, but I've always tucked my top sheet under the bed, military style. That said, even with the original queen and tucking the top sheet, the sheet still pulls out more often then not and I find my feet out in the breeze, at least on my side of the bed. There's a down side to being tall.

I'm short, at 5'8" and hate having my feet pinned down by the sheets tucked in. The first thing I do is untuck the foot of the bed. Obviously, people vary in their toleranced of confined feet.

Previously known as Travasac, we still have one and it works great. Ours is double sided with one rated for winter and one for summer.

Or, you just buy two sleeping bags on sale, one 3lb and one 5lb. Zip them together and place the 5lb on top in winter and 3lb on top in summer. Wash them as required. You won't get your feet tangled in sheets.

We have found that Bedbands from Amazon work very well at holding the corners of the bottom sheet. Search Amazon for "Bedband xl". They are available on both the US and Canada sites.

Ya but yours don't stick out in the drafts, they are still covered. 5'8" isn't exactly short either.

If this is the only issue regarding mattress width then going narrower wasn't too bad an idea.

I don't see the carry cases as being particularly dirty and even if they are, taking them camping would require wrapping anyway: if inside then a shower curtain wrap to keep the bed clean and if in the truck bed then a tarp for rain protection.

For the 5.0 pin weight to be a problem for my truck the 5.0 frame would likely go first. My home 5ver went across the scales at over 18,000 #s when my truck towed it from WA to AZ.

It is the completely unfitted top sheet that needs held. Do you think using them just at the bottom would work or would that just end up causing more problems due to tension from just one direction?

I really don't want to consider something like the Travasac but might consider it. I have a sleeping bag with the different weights but just not the same.

Maybe I could put some snaps in the bottom corners of the sheet with the mate screwed into the loft floor.

I’m sure the extra space will come in handy, but I think you’ll find not so much for the Clam.
We carried our Gazelle next to the bed on a trip to Florida, worked great on the way down but after being up for a week including last day in the rain, no way I wanted all that dampness, sand and more than a few strange looking bugs that close to where we sleep. If I did I’d be in a tent not a high dry and comfy Escape.

Definately something to keep in mind for potential situations: have both shower curtain and tarp for whichever carry location.

i need my feet out at night cant stand to have the sheet tucked in at the bottom. Also I can't make a bed very well always looks disheveled !

I remade the bed without any excess top sheet at the head, giving a few more inches to tuck underneath at the foot with plenty of covers tucked under at the foot too. SUCCESS: stayed tucked in.

In the Aframe I used the back side of the queen bed for storage but in the 5.0 it is just me & the dog and the fewer inches in width of the full/double mattress still leaves plenty of room.
