5.0 toilet water line

We plan to do some camping early March in an area that can be fairly cold. Any 5.0 owners have a solution for keeping the U shaped water line (which feeds the toilet) located in the landing gear switch compartment from freezing? I did a search but did not find anything related to this issue. Thanks, Dan

We have had three occasions where we had very low overnight temperatures that froze the campgrounds water supply and the toilet line survived.

I covered the elbow with foam pipe insulation, covered with a ensolite box. The box just sits over the pipe secured to the back wall of the hatch with duct tape. It seems to get enough heat from the hole (don’t plug), in the wall from the cabin that we have never had that line freeze. As long as it gets above freezing during the day it works. Scott

You can install pipe insulation for 1/2 inch line. Any home improvement store will carry it. Looks much like a water noodle with slit down the length and has tacky adhesive already applied.

I think the key is a little bit of heat from the interior space as Scott mentions. Just insulating a line in a cold area isn't going to keep it from freezing. If anything it just makes it harder to thaw out once it does freeze.

The object is, insulation will keep the water above freezing for a longer time, not keeping the water above freezing forever. The colder water is replaced with warmer water on every flush. We want to keep the water from freezing from our last flush at night till our first flush in the morning. I'll be insulating when we get home since we camp in freezing weather.

Enjoy,

Perry

I wonder if wallowing out a styrofoam block to fit over the waterline and cut-off valve would be a better solution. Hummm.

Why not plumb a hot water line to flush with at night, I assume your water heater is being used, may as well use some hot water in the lines, just thinking out of the box.

I wonder if a switched light bulb could be put in the compartment, just turn it on when it's going to be freezing, might have to experiment to see if an incandescent 12vdc bulb has enough heat.

Thanks for the suggestions, I think foam insulation for this trip will have to suffice as I am running out of time to get much else done before we leave.
