A/C problem

Our A/C runs for a few minutes and then starts short cycling, compressor only runs for a minute or two and cuts off. After a few of those very short cycles the fan will come on but no compressor at all and then the fan cuts off.

Fortunately we will likely not need the A/C for the rest of this 2 month trip, but thought I'd ask for possibilities from those of you knowledgeable about A/C issues, which I am not. Good shore power voltage in several locations so it's not that.

Doing great so far, made it to Utah today....it feels SO GOOD to be back out here!

Forgot to specify, I have the standard Dometic A/C.

Wondering if it could be a capacitor issue.

Okay! The capacitor that charges the compressor is shot. It may retain enough capacitance to get close but not enough to meet spec. Replace it and maybe the other one too.

Here is what I did. That is, when I finally wised up.

1. Go look at YouTube videos on this.

2. Find a good mobile repairman.

3. Set an appointment to come out and tell him everything (of course).

4. They can check the entire cabinet of the air unit to make sure the flywheel is not loose. Mine was.

5. My repair guy checked everything and walked me through the system. This was very helpful. He brought a 30 amp generator and started the unit up and checked up. BIG RELIEF!!!

Mobile so it gets done in 2 hours and not two weeks. Find a good one.

Update - we are in Torrey, Utah at an RV park with a good repair guy who does both RV and auto work. Has been here over 20 years. He had a run capacitor with the right specs and installed it this morning, compressor seems to be running happily now so that was the problem.

Just out of curiosity, and a need to be prepared if it happens to me, here's a picture of my air conditioner with shroud off and was wondering about the location of your bad capacitor. Upper right corner?

Yes, that's it. Wire connections on the top, looks like a shiny soup can.
