Problem solved!!!
I could not let it go, so I sprayed silicone spray where I could. I could probably have used something better, but I ran out of WD-40.
It runs much smoother now!

I'd be concerned about the lubricant attracting dirt, resulting in more noise and wear later. Not saying that will happen, but locksmiths warn against using WD40. They recommend a dry graphite powder.

You may be correct about the WD-40. I will be buying Boeshield T-9, which does not attract dust. But, for now, I am a Happy Camper!
