battery replacement

Well, my dual 6 volt batteries are now 4 years old. We are about to leave for a 5 week jaunt and I think I'd like to replace them before we go. My originals are Interstates, but my local garage guys say that the quality of these batteries has fallen off a lot over the last few years. So, what recommendations do you have? We depend exclusively on solar and this trip is all boondock (as are most). I can't find Jim Bennet's post on what he did so ... Thanks

Hi: Eddys... I just replaced our original '07 Interstate with a Trojan SCS200 12 V from Magnacharge Batteries. I was told that if I sold the trailer I should take this battery with me... It's that good. Alf

I also replaced Interstate with Trojan.
BTW, take a look at Interstate corporate statement on Google. Interesting.

I was always under the impression that dual x6's last longer than 12 volt models and 4 years is not that old. Maybe throw in a charger to carry with you in case but you maybe fine for another 3-4 years. It certainly won't leave you stranded and with a good meter you can monitor it's daily use.

I would agree with Jim that the batteries should last longer. Could you give some reasons why you think they need replacement? I do not think any of the chargers I have will do an equalize charge but that would be something I would consider. Have you done any testing with a hydrometer?

The big villain of batteries is taking them below 50% charge on a regular basis. I read somewhere that the Interstate batteries, the X2200, can with stand going below 50% over 200 times. I would guess that is not recommended as there will be degradation. How have yours been cared for in that department?

If I had to replace with six volt today I would use the Trojan T-105's.

a real big villian of batteries is being below 50% and freezing temps.
My first impression reading about 4 year old batteries being bad...was did you test them? they might be fine.

I got almost ten years out of my first set of six-volt batteries (bank of six) and seven out of the second set at my cabin and they were cycled a lot more than any RV batteries. They were Interstates and when I went to replace them with the third set, my battery guy said to go with Trojans.

As, I said, I bought Trojan, but you have to wonder, if all these guys are recommending Trojan, could it be that the profit margin is better?
Just asking.

HandyBob is a guy who has looked into many aspects of battery charging, and he also recommends Trojan. See https://handybobsolar.wordpress.com/...ging-puzzle-2/

He says: "I bought Trojan T105’s because I talked to many people that had them and found no dissatisfied customers. "
