Best scale for tongue weight - 17b?

Which one do y’all recommend? We’d prefer to be able to weigh on our driveway. Thanks!

I’ve heard great things about the Sherline 1000# scale. On the verge of buying one.

I have a Sherline. Bought a 1,000 lb. gauge to replace the 2,000 gauge mine came with. Much easier to read since my tongue weight is about 320/340 lbs. and it is more accurate at the middle of the range.

If you get it from etrailer, make sure it has the 1,000 lb. gauge or buy direct from Sherline.

Also, store it upright and don't lift it by the post.

Interesting, and weird. It's basically a cylinder with a piston and filled with oil. We leave our cars outside at 30 below.

Love to hear their reasons.

OMG, we leave it outside in Minnesota winters all the time! We do let it thaw out before using though.

Enjoy,

Perry

I guess the same concern would apply to my bottle jack?

Has anyone used the Weigh-safe such as this? https://www.weigh-safe.com/product/universal-tow-ball/. My main concern would be lack of detail (weighs 100-500 in 100 pound increments) but ease of use might beat out detail for a 17b. Just wondering about accuracy in that range (can you tell 300 from 350 for example?)

I found an inexpensive version of a tongue scale on eBay. It is made for the Australian market so the measurements are in kilograms. It ships from the US and cost $37 with free shipping. Reviewers said that in testing the results were close enough. You Canadian members will not have any issues, those of us from the US have to take the results and multiply by 2.2 to convert to pounds.

I has been used for two seasons.

For the infrequent use it gets I liked the price and do not mind making the conversion from metric to US.

These got some play a couple years ago. We have a sherline that works well. 1,000 lb dial as noted. The clearance notation on the post model would concern me if I were in the market.

Yes, to some extent - the bottle jack should be stored upright... but mostly due to the reservoir, not the high-pressure cylinder.

But no, it's not quite the same. The Sherline scale needs low seal friction to be sensitive, so it has just an O-ring for a seal. Whatever seal is in the bottle jack, I'm sure it's more durable.

I have used a small hydraulic cylinder as a tongue weight scale. It works decently, and is always stored on its side.
