That's typical of cabinet makers. Sometimes they use Lacquer. Neither finish is for the novice, because it requires an HVLP setup, a spray booth and a mask.
For home use a waterborne poly is a good choice, and I've also had fine results with Deft Clear Wood Finish, which is basically a brushable retarded lacquer.
The main thing is to get the sheen right, since there is no color. The varnish used by the cabinet finishers for ETI is more than likely a Satin.
