Chrome data saver

Found an issue with some RV parks WiFi and the data saver in the Chrome web browser. I thought in a couple of previous parks it was internet hogs or low bandwidth as attempts to open the escapeforum resulted in it partially opening then timing out. I ran into it again at this park. I use project Fi as a provider for my cellphone so I try to use Wifi instead of phone data when possible.
Then I noticed last night I could open anything that was not bookmarked. I tried the usual fix of clearing cache to no avail. As a last resort I turned off data saver and success. Apparently some RV parks block the port goggle uses to compress data which resulted in freezes .
So if you are using Chrome on Android and maybe IOS and you cannot open sites that normally work this might be affecting you too.

Fixing Chrome Data Saver...

Hi there! I happen to be the person who runs Chrome Data Saver and am surprised to hear this is a problem. This should not be happening and if possible I would like to get your help so we can fix it.

The next time you encounter this, could you do the following?

1) Turn Data Saver on.
2) Try to visit a page that isn't loading for you.
3) Tap on the "three dots" menu in Chrome.
4) Pick "Help and feedback"
5) Tap on "Send feedback"
6) Write something like "This page is not loading with Data Saver at an RV Park"

I realize this is a bit involved! What this will do is send us some information about what the problem is and why pages aren't loading. Hopefully we can fix it.

Thank you!

Jim, it's basically a proxy that compresses data. Instead of going directly to a site, you hit the Google servers, which then compress the data before forwarding it to you. That means you use less data, but the site may not be displayed exactly as when you hit it directly. Things like graphics might be fuzzier for example, because the image has been compressed to reduce the amount of data used.

Not exactly. Gateway usually refers to the IP address to which all traffic egresses a network.

I am sure that we would all be quite surprised to find out the identities of all of the people and organizations who are routinely monitoring the things we do or say on the internet.

QSL, of course the one I'm at for a couple days is one of the ones where you log in via a web site. Those always worked fine. The ones that gave me a problem where ones with a passphrase and it was only four of them so far. When I connect everything seems fine and I can Google and go to new sites. But ones that were bookmarked like this site never loaded and eventually timed out with a lost connection error. I will leave data saver on and hopefully hit another Wi-Fi that acts up. I thought it was overloaded wifi but wondered as my wife never had an issue. But hers is an Amazon Fire tablet.
