I used Goo B Gone when I cleaned up the old silicone surrounding the Black Water Tank vent housing. I also used it when replacing my Bathroom Vent on my 17b. It cleaned up the residue left after removing the bulk of the butyl tape and silicone. I prefer the use of Goo B Gone to stronger thinners as it evaporates slower. A paper towel soaked in GBG will soften residue in 5 min.

Just be careful with acetone or any other such solvents near the rubber parts of the window as it can swell, harden and distort it.

I always fear using any type of harsh chemical for fear of etching the shine off the gel coat. I would also hate to damage the paint around the window fittings.

Anyone found a safe and easy way to deal with the black streaks that appear below the windows when the trailer is in storage?

I used mineral spirits along with a plastic eating utensil knife - worked very well and cleaned up the stains on the caulk. Mineral spirits is much less intense to work with than acetone. I washed them all then with auto soap and water to remove any remaining mineral spirits.

I also removed the old caulk on the front window and recaulked using the Pro Flex Reace uses. It is expensive but really decent to work with and seems to last a very long time.

I did the same a few days ago, cleaned of any excess balls of of the putty, and cleaned the frame off with Varsol. Worked great.

Did mine today. Used rubbing alcohol to clean things up. Looks great again. Love my Escape!

So, the question was, what is this little red plastic thing that was included in the welcome bags at the Escape Rally this year?
My theory was that it was a scraper for cleaning up excess butyl, but I never did hear if I guessed right.

Just an FYI for those who don't know-- acetone is an extremely hot solvent that WILL harm the gelcoat of your trailer, as well as most surfaces it touches. It is NOT the same as 'nail polish remover with perfumes'. While nail polish remover may contain a low percentage of acetone, it is not acetone. There is a common group of very hot solvents we used to use when I worked in the paint industry, each for cutting a particular coating-- xylene, toluene, acetone and lacquer thinner. Never use these on a finished surface unless you want it damaged.

Gm has a spray cleaner much like spray 9 that seems to work well on the residue left from the Butle tape . Doesn't seem to harm the gel coat .

Glenn, apparently no prize, but you did guess right. Dennis confirmed it for me at the rally.
