Concerns about Carlisle tires

We had a flat tire when we returned home yesterday from our first trip of the year.

After talking with friends and reading a lot of negative comments online about Carlisle tiresI am debating; do I buy one Carlisle to match or replace all 4 with another brand?

The tire that went down was not because of a tire issue, we found a nail in the flat.

Are other owners happy with Carlisle or would you go to another brand, and what brands do others recommend?

Thanks
Larry

I put Carlisle tires on a year ago when I replaced original Marathons. I have no concerns. I think the interweb is pretty much a useless resource when it comes to tires.
My Marathons also got negative reviews and gave me no problems in eight years. I only replaced due to age.

Hummm, can you patch the tire effectively and change it out for the spare? That's what I'd do because I'm cheap.

Larry, Only one year on our Carlisles, but 12,000 wonderful miles with no problems. I will replace with the same when the time comes. And, as Donna says, I would repair if possible. Piece of cake!

Do a search. Lots of discussion on tires. On my second set of Carlisles. The new ones rated for 80 mph. Unusual for a trailer tire. Very happy with the originals and my replacements.

When I tow at 60 or 62 mph on the interstate, I get passed by other RVs doing 75 mph or more. I check my tire pressure frequently. I have not had any blow-outs with any trailer I have owned (a total of 5). If I were to replace my tires I would have no qualms using Carlisles again. Or I might take a look at Maxxis tires. However, I am inclined to believe the bad reviews on the net are likely from some of the idiots who scream by me at 75 mph+, quite possibly on under inflated tires, and then blame it on the tires. If they are that much in a rush, I imagine they rush through their trip preparations also.

Carlisle Radial Trail's had issues a number of years ago giving them a well deserved bad rep. A few years back they re-engineered them, I've not heard any horror stories since, folks seem happy with them as am I.

I did however have one blow out in December at about 15k miles, no idea why. Put another 10k on the rest of the set without issue. I had some off brand put on to replace the bad one. While I'm happy with the Carlisle's I may swap to Maxxis M8008. I will have to take a look at the 80mph version that Tim mentions.

If someone tried to sell you a set of Towmax's, run.

It depends on how much you drove with the flat tire. On my 21 I had gone maybe 50 miles before noticing the flat. Because I may had damaged the other tire by overloading I replaced both tires, but since the other side had 15,000 miles I replaced all 4. So it depends, if you caught the flat quickly then one tire maybe all you need.

I could hear it when it went, sounded like when you drive over one of the metal floored bridges. Took a couple miles on the highway to figure out what it was.
I see the 81mph Carlisles are the HD's.

Hi: LDRay... We too had a flat in Florida. Tire went down slowly while set up at Scamp camp. Pumped it up with the help of another Scamp camper and pulled it out to a tire shop. They fixed it for $15. and gave me the screw out of it for a souvenir. Made the trip home on it and will continue using Carlisle tires. It's the first flat in our RV history. Alf

A nail will make any tire look bad.

Hi: cpaharley2008... I'm thinking that a double axle trailer can be some what to blame. The first tire sets the screw up for the second one to take the flak!!! Our slow leak'r with the "Deck screw" in it was a rear tire door side!!! Alf

I agree, that was the same as to my experience coming to your rally 2 years ago, rear passenger side.

I wish someone would invent a tire that only went flat or blew out on a nice day ,while driving slowly and right by a tire shop that's open and not real busy . I have blown trailer tires on several occasions.
Everytime it was in the middle of nowhere , on a rainy / snowy day and at night or on a holiday . I replace my trailer tire every 3 years or after approx 20,000 miles. The cost of a set of trailer tires is not that much money to spend and I feel more confident when heading out on a long voyage . I take my old trailer tire and install them on my utility trailer that I use to haul firewood. That way I get about 6 years use out of a set of tires .
I don't believe any brand of trailer tires is blowout proof. Some tire brands are better than others but non are perfect .
We are planning a trip to New England for this Fall
( Approx 5000 miles) and the trip will be made with new trailer tires.
I figure if we can afford the trip then we can afford new tires.
We presently have Carlisle radial trailer tire and have not encountered any issues.
Like others have stated if you look at the internet , every trailer tire made is a piece of junk in someone's opinion .
