Question Converter failure assistance, please

Our 3 year old 17A is not charging the batteries via the shore power cord. Following the diagnostic instructions in the Cheng converter distribution center manual I tested the voltage coming off the terminals meant to feed the batteries and sure enough it indicates a problem (low/varying voltage, 4 to 7 v's - not a steady 13.6 volts). I tested the Progressive EMS box for proper function and it is working fine getting power to the AC side of the panel (also shows all is normal at the EMS readout panel). The GoPower solar side of things is working and will charge batteries when in sun meaning the wiring at and from the batteries is not the problem. All wiring connections throughout are intact and cinched down. All fuses show conductivity including the one out at the battery.

Has anyone had this problem and if so did you have to replace the entire converter or is there a way to isolate the problem and change out just part of it?

If indeed you did have to replace the converter, is it a DIY job or does it get pretty dicey? There's a lot of wires to deal with as well as precious little room to maneuver in there. I cannot find any wiring diagram for this model and doubt there is one. The wiring logic is pretty weird - one circuit has rear lights and vent fan, another has one single light over bench, etc.

Thanks for any helpful advice on offer.

You can replace the lower section of the power distribution center (the actual converter) with either the same brand from WFCO or better yet, a Progressive Dynamics replacement converter. Talk with Randy at Best Converters. In either case it is a fairly simple exchange - 4 wires...

Thank you! That helps. I talked with Randy and will be replacing the original that Escape installed with a Progressive Wildkat converter. Reportedly the one we all got was a rather dubious part. They fail a lot.

You learn something new every day! I didn't realize that WFCO is made in China. That explains a lot - no wonder the converter doesn't charge the batteries right.

A replacement converter seems to be in my immediate future. Seems to be two brands that come recommended - which one is the better choice?

edit: After looking at reviews, the Powermax is off the list - poor voltage stability and no customer service.

Good choice. I did this exchange proactively and it has been flawless. Made in USA.

I am interested in making this change primarily for improved charging performance and to extend battery life. I am looking at the Best Converter website and plan to visit with Randy before placing an order. I would like a greater understanding of the different options before I call.

Are there any substantial differences between replacing with the "Second generation Powermax Boondocker Series deck mount 4-stage converter/charger with industry leading 3 year warranty. Replaces any WFCO 8900 series power center main board assembly" ($159) versus the Progressive Dynamics, where there appear to be two or more (?) options, their Wildkat PD4655L ($203) and several versions of the PD4655 "Upgrade Kits" ($217), [V or VL suffixes]. I recognize that the "L" suffix indicates the ability (to also, not only?) to charge lithium, but that is not (at present) an issue for me. Reliability and optimal charging of flooded or AGM lead is what I am looking for. I have the ETI factory dual 6V flooded cell batteries and a single (160 or 170) solar panel; estimate our trailer use to be about 60% off grid and 40% hook ups. I do not have a problem kneeling down to see a display/scroll through charging programs. No interest in a smartphone or bluetooth. Thanks to anyone who has experience or greater understanding regarding the different options.

Speak to Randy but this was the latest and greatest when I installed mine. It has been flawless and should work perfectly for what you describe.

PD 4655L MBA WildKat 55 Amp Main Board Assembly for WFCO 8955 or Parallax 7155 (Includes 4600 Remote)

I believe the “V” upgrade kits have a replacement 12VDC board which you don’t need. Also the charge wizard pendant is optional. I liked the Progressive Dynamics brand better (made in USA and great customer service) but many people out there seem happy with the Boondocker too. Not sure where Boondocker is made. Randy at BestConverter is really your best source for specifics. Good guy who won’t steer you wrong.
