Depth of under bed storage in new 21
I am going to buy a propane fire bowl. Something like a Camco Lil Red, or Outland 870. I would like to store this under the bed upright. Could someone with a new body 21 measure the area where the bed lifts up?
Thanks
Shawn

You will need the size of the exterior hatch, may fit if taken apart, but not in the box.
The website states 8.5" high....

According to the 21' PDF with measurements, the Bed Platform from floor is 17 ¼”. That doesn't take into account any bracing that may be in the way.

You could always put it under the bed by lifting the mattress inside. Not necessarily convenient, but possible all the same if really decided that it works the best. Each person may have their own reasons.

Thanks guys, just what I was looking for. I figured that the fire bowl would not fit through the outside access door, I planned on placing it under the bed by lifting the bed.

Unless you add a spring or pneumatic cylinder, you are going to get tired of lifting the bed (and holding it up) to get to the storage area real fast!

Campfires
We have a campfire in a can. We haul
It under one of the Dinette seats. It’s packed with all of its original foam packing and has been about 50,000 miles with us. With the heavy bed on the 21, we only access the area under the bed with the two
Access doors (interior) and the exterior hatch where we put the bag chairs. I have the exterior quick propane connect but rarely use it as I don’t like to draw down “essential” propane. I have an 11 lb. separate tank which rides in the front box. It’s for the campfire, Weber Q, and Camp Chef Everest. No more little cylinders for me.

You forgot to mention the tripping hazard Dave.

Tripping Hazard
After you run the campfire in a can for a few hours and entertain yourself and your guests with lies and adult beverages, be careful you do not trip over the portable campfire hose. Your “friends” will not let you forget this and in addition other “friends” will complain that because you invited their better half to this little clambake they had to spend some of their hard earned pension on a campfire in a can or like clone. In addition, you’ll be a little dissappointed at the public disclosure which could have been kept quiet. Especially after your genuine concern when said discloser took a nasty fall one morning and you dutifully picked up the 18 water bottles which were randomly distributed over a wide area. But you know you’d do it over again this year at Osoyoos if they’d show up thirsty.

dave, could you please tell me brand and width of your auxiliary tank? i have one for my home bbq and planned to use it for my fire dancer campfire (purchased because it weighs only 9 lbs), but it wont fit in the front box of my 17--it's about the same width as the ones on the tongue. thanks very much. (not sure if all boxes are same width)

I just use a length of 2"X2" with a wood screw in one end to fit thru the hole in the plywood mattress board. Wedge the floor end of 2X2 on bed frame being careful to avoid the pex tubing that is also attached along the bottom of the bed frame. That frees up both hands to put things in and out of storage. Store the stick in the same storage area.

There are two common styles of propane cylinder which hold about 10 pounds of propane: - one is the same diameter as a common 20-pound cylinder, but shorter
- the other is about the same height as a common 20-pound cylinder, but skinnier
Manchester Tank sizes:
common 20-pound:12.2" or 309 mm diameter by 18" or 457 mm tall (18 lb or 8.2 kg tare weight) short/wide 11-pound:12.2" or 309 mm diameter by 12.4" or 315 mm tall (14 lb or 6.4 kg tare weight) tall 10-pound:8.9" or 225 mm diameter by 17.4" or 442 mm tall (15 lb or 6.8 kg tare weight) It looks like you might have the 11-pound, but a 10-pound would fit better in the front cargo box.
The 9-pound weight of your current one seems strange - the only common size which is that light (5-pound capacity) is so small in diameter that it seem unlikely to be problem to fit it in the front storage box...
5-pound:8.0" or 203 mm diameter by 12" or 305 mm tall (10 lb or 4.5 kg tare weight)
(basically the diameter of the skinny 10-pound and height of the short 11-pound) Worthington's version of this is slightly larger in diameter (9.1" instead of 8.0") and very slightly shorter, but that still doesn't look large enough to be a problem.

You will find that anything other than the standard 20lb bottle will cost more, a lot more.

I have the Worthington cylinder. It holds 11 lbs of propane and it weighs 10 lbs empty. I bought it at the Bass Pro shop in Des Moines Iowa. It was fairly pricey (about $70) I wouldn’t have spent that much on it but I found a gift card I had been given when I retired from selling ball diamond supplies about three years before and since I’d won two rods and reels, a cooler, a life Jacket and a filet knife in five consecutive crappie tournaments there wasn’t much else I needed so I squandered the card on the tank and I love it. It fits in the front box of the 21 easily. I screwed an Oreck carpet cleaning bucket to the wood on the bottom and set it in there and the bucket keeps the cylinder upright. We bought the campfire in a can before they went out of production. It’s been good if you don’t drink too much and trip over the hose

brian b-p, thanks for such a thorough response. i apologize for the lack of clarity in my post...it's the campfire that weighs 9 lbs. i do have the 11 lb propane tank and the 10 is just what i need. maybe i can find someone who wants the 11.
dave, the bucket idea/installation is great. i'll look around to see if i can find something similar when i get the other tank.

Propane in storage box
Here’s a couple pictures of how the smaller tank fits in the front box on our 21. There’s a few paper towels in the bucket bottom to hold it up slightly otherwise the fit was a little tight.

Wish I would’ve followed the gas-line. But we did have a good turnout at this fiberglass rv rally.
