Dometic air-conditioner

Hi, all,

I think I have a simple question, I think, and need your collective wisdom: we have a 2011 17B with the Dometic air conditioner option. So this question is directed to those who also have that option.

On our first outing of the year in SittEscape last weekend, I wanted to ensure that all systems were normal. Everything worked fine except, perhaps, the air conditioner.

I tried the air conditioner in relatively cool weather. Yes, the unit turned on but I could not hear the compressor until the temperature dial was turned all the way to the right on the #10. As soon as I backed off in the slightest, the compressor would cycle off. I'm trying to decide whether I have a problem or whether that would be normal, just because the temperature was cool.

I recall last season that I could get the compressor cycle on even at the 3 and 4 level, although admittedly, that was in much warmer weather. Yes, I was plugged into a 30 amp receptacle with nothing else running and everything else seemed okay with the electricity, etc.

Do I need to take my unit to a Dometic service center for a warranty checkup? Or will full functionality return as the weather warms up?

So, you keepers of Escape wisdom, please enlighten me.

Ksitte

Re: Dometic air-conditioner

It sounds like as you mentioned, too cool for the compressor to kick in, if you look at the manual I'm sure there is a temperature range. I'd wait until it gets above 80 and try it again to see if it cycles on/off.

Re: Dometic air-conditioner

Klaus,

As you may recall, we don't have an AC unit on our 15B. But as a measurement scienties, the thing to do is get one of those $10 indoor'outdoor thermometers and measure the temps and run some tests. I would suggest, that as the previous poster noted, it is probably a situation where it was just too cool to get the compressor to turn on.

Re: Dometic air-conditioner

A collective thanks to all of you for the reassurance that my problem may be weather related, not a mechanical issue. I guess I'll just need to wait until we hit 80° in Montana, if that ever happens this year. Looks like we've got at least another 10 days to wait for dry, warm days.

And Roger, greetings & thanks for the tip on the testing scenario. Hope you're getting your fair share of outings so far. Regrettably, we're not scheduled for Glacier this year, not with SittEscape, at least. We'll do some hiking there with some relatives later this month. But we are scheduled to take SittEscape to the Tetons in mid July. Should be fun!
