Dometic RML8555 Replacement

Well here we are at sunny Kootenay Lake and our Dometic RML8555 has finally given up. We have a 2012 19 and would like any suggestions on a replacement fridge - that can also fit through the door for installation Escape is suggesting the 2-door version of our fridge, the RMD8555. Thank you!

That is what replaced the single door unit. It works fine and once finely tuned had no issues.

I would probably steer clear of the RMD8555. That model has a checkered past based on comments on the forum and my personal experience. The issue with any replacement is the door width on generation one trailers. There are limited models that will fit.

In defense of the RMD8555, there are a good number of owners that are satisfied with that model. It does work for some. I just would not be willing to chance it.

Am satisfied with RMD8555; not sure what option you have other than same as you have now. Guess you missed the thread where you could send in your serial number to be eligible for a swap to the RMD8555, only cost was the install and Domestic paid the first hour of labor if done at. Domestic Authorized shop- which interestingly ETI evidently is not. Doesn't hurt to try as I distinctly recall it didn't matter how old your RML was at the time the offer was made.

As far as I know the RMD 8555 is the only other large fridge that will fit, if you pass on it you'll need to go smaller then the hole in the wall.

I had the RML and now the RMD, not great, but better then the RML. Of course I don't do 100 degree camping.

Most of them are working great from what I have seen on the forum. I wonder why yours was not. But perhaps you are talking about towing with propane. We do not use it towing. But I think others do.

No telling why some of them are having problems but I have seen very few problems on this model. One person I think now has it working well who had a problem. So I take it that you were never able to get yours going well.

Perhaps they did start putting more insulation in after yours and before ours?

That insulation possibility is a good one. I have none around my refrigerator.

Regarding issues with the RMD8555, I have been making a list of those of us who have been affected using this model. There are 10, like myself, who I have identified, having issues with cooling while driving or cooling with higher temperatures. Some have been more successful in solving the problem.

I may reach out to those on my list to determine build dates. Then again, I also want to do some traveling, mmm . . . which comes first?

Thanks for your responses! We purchased the trailer second hand and therefore don't qualify for the upgrade/recall as it is only available for original owners (according to Escape). Interested in any information on other makes/models that might fit - even smaller ones. Thanks again!

Go do your traveling, the fridges will still be NG when you get back.

I was sure that you had done some fixes on your refrigerator and I thought that insulation must be one of them. If not, maybe that is it. Pat and others seem to be doing well with adding insulation.

How about the RM2510? These are the model that was in the early 19's. You'll lose a little capacity, has manual controls and no 12VDC operation option, but I don't think these have had the issues that others have experienced with the newer fridges. No problems so far for us. Also had one in an older Scamp and never had an issue. I'm sure others will weigh in.

Another vote for the RM2510 . Was the refrigerator in our camper and worked really well . However the cavity was very insulated . Dave did you get your package ? Pat

If it were me I would still press the RMD swap deal with Dometic.ETI doesn't allow a transfer of its warranty (which seems odd) yet Dometic made a deal regarding the RML given so many complaints. Sounds like yours wore out from trying to keep up.

We had the 2510 and it was nowhere near as good as the two-door RMD8555. At least for us.

I believe that is what our 2010 17B had (we opted for the larger fridge) and it performed very well for us and as far as I know is still working well for the folks who bought our 17.

I believe we were originally asked to have the local Dometic folks contact Mark, then Tammy posted about not contacting Mark.

Might attempt reading through the original thread, it's long. http://www.escapeforum.org/forums/f3...etic-5509.html

When I had my RML switched to RMD I requested and inspected the removal and installation with extra insulation. then there was the heat thermocouple issue for the stock fan installed which we all by passed, then the hanging thermistor and plugging the door hole underneath. Finally after all that we got it working, oh the cup of water on the back condensate drain needs a p trap or ballon. Finally, later there were burn marks along the flue due to the RMD being 1" bigger was 1" closer to the flue wall causing potential issues. The newer Americana models have similar issues but we all have the experience now to make them work.
