Washers are cheaper and if you drop a few on the ground... oh well.

I have a lifetime of “feel starting” bolts in blind spaces. Jim’s right, with good concentration and a steady hand and fingers that can both pinch and adjust the starting angle ever so slightly the anode is not too tough to restart as long as the threads are clean. They’re makin those bottle caps out of better metal than they did 40 years ago. Must be. I can’t believe I’ve lost any strength since those cap bending days of my wasted yute

Good idea. Maybe a little wire brush on a Dremel to speed the process up a bit. Then a magnet and a good flush with water to wash out any dislodged rust particles.

Mmmm sorry Donna, I don't think you have bought any washers in a long time. Alaska washers are .35 each. Quarters are cheaper. I'm about to drill 1/2" holes in mine.

In light of not duplicating seldom used tools on board, I use my torque wrench and (what is it?) 1 - 1/16" socket. I don't need to carry a breaker bar. Works great ... then I go practice on my lugs. When its time to put the anode back in at spring time ... wrap just one time around with Teflon tape (more wraps just encourages leaks), push it in with your fingers and turn a little. You will feel if your cross threading ... untwist and try again ... with your fingers or the socket with a 6" extension bar held in your hand. Again you will feel if its going in right. All good? then re-tighten with the torque wrench ... does not have to be gorilla tight.

As some say .... easy peasy.

When re-installing you are trying to thread in that anode nut straight but the weight of the anode is working against you .... that's why you want to use just your fingers or maybe a hand held extension plus socket to feel if the threads are lining up right.

When you pull the anode, its rather surprising how much water the water heater holds ...

Good luck Kate .... anyone who can chase down a fox on horseback won't have trouble here. Not sure I can do that ...

Tom

My numb, arthritic fingers prefer to fill the 1 1/16" socket with coins ( CAD ), mount it on an extension, mounted on a ratchet, place the anode in the socket and spend how ever long it takes to get the threads started, and then gently flip the ratchet lever so the socket turns clockwise.
And then, when the Teflon tape starts bunching up, remove the anode and wrap the tape counter-clockwise and try again.

It's a brand new trailer so I'm sure the anode is good

I am still bending beer caps in one hand easy, though those repetitive actions do see my fingers start to seize now. I am good with a manual screw driver for a very short time.

Hi: cpaharley2008... The time I get in a tear is when I seem to have a wardrobe malfunction. Every time I greet Ben Dover... my truck alarm goes off!!!
Now is the time to drain the water heater. Thanks to the forum for the reminder to let the pressure off first. Alf

I was just wondering when they made beer caps out of aluminum foil and how long I would need to soak the phone book in water.

Dave used to crush aluminum pop tops, and just rip them one page at a time....

Foolishness

Hey Eric,
I don’t know about aluminum bottle caps but I do remember compression exploding Hamm’s cans against my skull to open them. Ever do that? Maybe a new rally event, you go first.

I hope this was AFTER you had already had many of those Hamms to deaden the blow!

'spains a lot.

I was always sorta smart enough to drain them first. Though (a moment of weakness here) I was know to open beer bottle or two or a hundred with my teeth when I was young.... that was until the chipped tooth incident one time after lots of imbibing.

My anode is always more than 'finger tight'. When I first got the trailer I had to use an 12” wrench to loosen it. So now I always make sure it is snugged up pretty well.

On a related topic, anodes come in aluminum and magnesium varieties. Any notion on which one is better than the other? I have been told it depends upon the minerals in your water, but with an rv the minerals are different each time you fill the tank
